The Washington Commanders face a tough road test this week when they face the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday Night Football.

The Commanders have struggled in Jayden Daniels’ second season. Last year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year has battled injuries that have kept him out of games this season, leaving the offense in the capable hands of Marcus Mariota. The offense isn’t really the Commanders’ problem. Although injuries to Deebo Samuel and Terry McLaurin definitely impacted the team, they’ve managed to keep scoring points.

Defensively is where the Commanders struggle, and that is unfortunate when you’re facing the likes of Patrick Mahomes, who just got his top weapon back in Rashee Rice. Against the Commanders’ bottom-five pass defense, it could get ugly on Monday.

Let’s take a look at some fantasy players to start and sit from the Commanders and Chiefs Week 8 matchup.

Start: WR Rashee Rice

As indicated above, the Commanders’ pass defense is not good. Rice was suspended for six games this season due to his involvement in a car accident, and his return to the field last week saw him rack up seven receptions for 42 yards and two touchdowns in the Chiefs’ rout of the Las Vegas Raiders. Marshon Lattimore and Trey Amos will have their hands full on Monday as Rice hits his projected 17.25 points without a problem.

Sit: TE Travis Kelce

Kelce was targeted just three times in Rice’s return to the Chiefs, and while he caught all three passes, his role has changed. Kelce will still provide a viable outlet for Patrick Mahomes, but he will not be targeted as often as he has been. The Commanders are holding tight ends to 8.71 points in fantasy, so even though Kelce is projected to have 10.21 points, he will have to work hard to get there against the Commanders on Monday.

Start: RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt

Croskey-Merritt struggled in the Commanders’ loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 7, but this week, he’s facing a Chiefs run defense that is mediocre at best. Marcus Mariota is capable of running with the ball, but it certainly isn’t his preference, and with the Chiefs’ top-five pass defense, the ground game is going to be crucial to the Commanders. Wild Bill is expected to score just 11.53 points this week, but I believe he will do better.

Sit: WRs Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel

These two can be grouped together because the explanation is the same: Both players are dealing with injuries, albeit different ones, and even though both players have practiced in full this week, they will struggle against the Chiefs’ top-five pass defense. Until we see how they bounce back, it’s best to keep them on your bench.

Sleeper: RB Isiah Pacheco

Pacheco is the Chiefs’ main running back, and with Kareem Hunt questionable for this game, Pacheco could be on track for a breakout game. After having 10 or fewer carries through the first five weeks, Pacheco had 12 carries in Week 6 and 15 in Week 7. He’s averaging 4.1 yards per carry, and the Commanders allow 4.3 yards per carry. Pacheco could be a quiet explosion in Week 8.
