OAKLAND – It was Burns that burned Riverside’s hopes for playoff victory Friday night in Iowa Class A action.

In a battle between two of Iowa’s top rushing leaders – the Bulldogs’ running back Jaxon Gordon and BGM quarterback Beau Burns – it was Burns who burned it up on the field, rushing for five touchdowns as they upset Riverside 35-30 in a first-round Iowa Class A playoff game Friday night in Oakland.

Burns scored on the Bears’ opening drive from 6-yards out, but the Bulldogs and Bears would go back and forth most of the way. Landyn Schoenrock showed his quarterback skills with a 69-yard touchdown run off the fake handoff, and after Burns scored again, the Bulldogs put up a 51-yard Jaxon Gordon touchdown and a 33-yard Peyton Amdor field goal to make it 17-14.

Both teams traded scores Burns from 4 yards, then Schoenrock to Amdor for a 58-yard reception, then two straight touchdowns by Burns both for 6 yard, and then Gordon’s 39-yard run for the final score with 6:54 left.

However, after the final Riverside score that brought it to 35-30, the Bulldog defense could not get the ball back and BGM ran the clock out.

Gordon ended his final high school game for Riverside with 151 yards and two touchdowns, while Schoenrock had 170 total yards including 60 passing. BGM’s Burns finished with 361 total yards, including 283 on the ground.

Riverside ends the season 6-3.
