49ers vs. Texans: The matchup
The Texans go into the weekend leading the NFL in scoring defense (14.7 ppg) as part of their 2-4 start to the season. Offensively, the team has shown signs of life with a 26-0 victory over the Tennessee Titans in Week 4 and a 44-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5, but came out of their Week 6 bye with a 27-19 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Quarterback C.J. Stroud continues to search for the promising form of his rookie season in 2023 while also adding a new level to his running game. He has averaged 7.3 yards per carry as the Texans press forward without top rusher Joe Mixon.
The 49ers have done more than simply stay afloat in the extended absence of starting quarterback Brock Purdy with a toe injury. That absence continues into Week 8 with Purdy ruled out for the sixth straight week and backup Mac Jones set to start again. Jones is 4-1 in his previous five starts for the Niners despite showing signs of regression with zero touchdown passes and three interceptions over his past two contests. Jones threw for 154 yards and an interception in last week’s 20-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons, but was bailed out by Christian McCaffrey’s 201 total yards and strong defensive effort.
