SALT LAKE CITY — Facing a double-digit deficit to Iowa State on the road and not much going well to start the game — including losing star rusher LJ Martin — BYU had a decision.
Accept the defeat following an emotional rivalry game win and move on to fight another week, or fight back against a tough Cyclones team who had all the momentum following a bye week.
The Cougars found their opportunity with 1:45 left in the first half after trailing 24-10. Freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier led the Cougars on a 10-play, 60-yard drive that was capped off with a 12-yard passing touchdown to Parker Kingston to narrow the score before the halftime break.
It was all BYU needed.
The Cougars used the closing-half touchdown to outscore the Cyclones 24-3 the remainder of the way en route to keeping the undefeated streak alive for another week.
With another win as part of only six remaining undefeated teams left in the country, BYU moved up again to No. 10 (tied with Miami) in the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings, which was released Sunday afternoon. The Cougars remain locked in a logjam of teams at the top in the first week this season where a top-10 team didn’t lose.
The resilient Cougars remain the highest-ranked team from the Big 12 for another week, with No. 13 Texas Tech nearby after a blowout win over Oklahoma State. Joining BYU in the rankings from the conference is No. 17 Cincinnati and Houston for the first time at No. 22.
Utah jumped back into the rankings after one of the most lopsided affairs of the weekend, in which the Utes rolled to a 53-7 win over Colorado and had 587 total yards of offense, while limiting the Buffaloes to just 140 total yards. At halftime, Colorado had -18 total yards of offense as Utah’s defense blitzed on nearly every down.
The Utes, who were unofficially ranked No. 27 after a loss to BYU last week, moved back into the top 25 at No. 24 and will host ESPN “College GameDay” on Saturday when it welcomes Cincinnati to Salt Lake City in another ranked matchup.
On a bye week, Ohio State remained the No. 1 team in the country with 54 first-place votes, though No. 2 Indiana continues to siphon votes each week. The Hoosiers received 11 first-place votes, while No. 3 Texas A&M received one. Rounding out the top five this week is Alabama and Georgia in no change from last week.
