Carson Wentz, the backup quarterback to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes last season, remains without a new contract.
The 32 year old became a free agent after one year with the Chiefs in 2024 where he played in three games (one as a starter) and completed 12 of 19 passes for just over 100 yards in total.

KC was Wentz’s fifth new team in five years after he was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles – the team who drafted him No. 2 overall in 2016 – to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021. The reset of his resume features stops with the Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams.
Now approaching what would be his 10th season in the NFL, Wentz is expected to join his sixth team, but this move would keep him in the Chiefs’ AFC West division.
The Denver Broncos could be a team to keep an eye on in their search for a more serviceable backup quarterback to Bo Nix.
Broncos Country was thoroughly impressed with Nix’s promising rookie season last year and their expectations are through the roof for his career. However, if he were to get hurt, Denver’s current backup is Jarrett Stidham.

Wentz should be looked at as a more reliable option than Stidham thanks to his years of starting experience and flashes of elite play – something Stidham has really never had or showed.
If Denver were to target a QB2 from the current free agent pool, there is no better option than Wentz … minus Aaron Rodgers. A veteran coach like Sean Payton should be very interested in a veteran quarterback like Wentz who has a ton of experience as a backup and contributor throughout his extensive time in the league.
For Kansas City, the backup quarterback position will never get close to making up for a potential loss of Patrick Mahomes, but the insurance is needed nonetheless.
This offseason, KC acquired Gardner Minshew from the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, in a fun reunion of two QBs who thrived on the “air raid” scheme made famous in college football by former Texas Tech coach and Minshew’s mentor at Washington State Mike Leach.Â

The signing also furthers the probability that Wentz’s time with the Chiefs has come to a close.
If he were to connect with the Broncos, there may be no better place for Wentz to compete and potentially earn his way back into a starting lineup. Sophomore seasons are never a guarantee, so if Nix gets off to a poor start, someone like Wentz could clean up the mess and be a saving grace for Denver.
He’ll also be pretty cheap. Wentz’s contract last season was worth $3.32 million.
As offseason programs begin to ramp up, the Broncos could be on the short list of teams that might be interested in Carson Wentz as a late backup quarterback find.
