It was an emotional day across the NFL for on- and off-the-field reasons, especially for both New York teams. It also was a day of celebration on “National Tight End Day.”
It started with a blowout on “Thursday Night Football” and then a relatively uneventful early slate on Sunday before two bad teams dazzled in an unlikely shoot-out.
The afternoon slate wasn’t much better, but then “Sunday Night Football” rolled around and delivered for a half before it got ugly.
Here is where San Francisco sits in the latest power rankings after their 26-15 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday at NRG Stadium and heading into “Monday Night Football:”
32. Tennessee Titans (Last week: 31)
Record: 1-7
For those keeping track (me), because there’s nothing interesting about this team whatsoever, Cam Ward took four sacks on Sunday. He is on pace to be sacked 68 times this season, which would be tied for the third-most in a season in NFL history.
31. New Orleans Saints (Last week: 30)
Record: 1-7
We have a Tyler Shough sighting. The once-presumed starter now will compete with Spencer Rattler for the QB1 job. These men are having a mid-off.
30. New York Jets (Last week: 32)
Record: 1-7
An emotional day for the franchise results in their first win of the season. A statement win for Justin Fields, too. Just all-around awesome, especially for the front office, which needs to trade Breece Hall.
29. New York Giants (Last week: 25)
Record: 2-6
Another devastating injury to one of New York’s offensive stars. Heartbreaking for Cam Skattebo, whose rookie season ends in a gruesome way.
28. Cleveland Browns (Last week: 26)
Record: 2-6
Myles Garrett’s FIVE sacks — yes, you read that correctly — didn’t seem to matter. Dillon Gabriel, unsurprisingly, is not the guy.
27. Las Vegas Raiders (Last week: 28)
Record: 2-5
(Bye week)
26. Miami Dolphins (Last week: 29)
Record: 2-6
Either Tua Tagovailoa was replaced by a body double, or there’s been one in his place for over a year. Either way, the guy who played on Sunday looked phenomenal, and it might have saved his — or someone’s — job.
25. Cincinnati Bengals (Last week: 24)
Record: 3-5
Joe Flacco has completely revived this offense, but the defense, on the other hand, remains hot garbage. What should they do with Trey Hendrickson?
24. Baltimore Ravens (Last week: 27)
Record: 2-5
This was a must-win game for Baltimore without Lamar Jackson. No, seriously. If they lose this game, their playoff hopes are pretty much dashed. A gritty effort from Tyler Huntley and Derrick Henry.
23. Arizona Cardinals (Last week: 23)
Record: 2-5
(Bye week)
22. Carolina Panthers (Last week: 21)
Record: 4-4
Carolina’s defense got a taste of what its offense has been doing to teams in recent weeks. We shouldn’t be surprised they can’t hang with the big boys.
21. Minnesota Vikings (Last week: 19)
Record: 3-4
Get Carson Wentz off my screen now. J.J. McCarthy’s return can not come sooner, and it sounds like that will be Week 9.
20. Atlanta Falcons (Last week: 17)
Record: 3-4
A pretty decent Falcons team is kind of in a free-fall, and their superstar, Bijan Robinson, has been missing for two weeks. He needs to be found, ASAP.
19. Dallas Cowboys (Last week: 18)
Record: 3-4-1
Dak Prescott has to be pretty close to flawless if Dallas is going to be competitive with a non-existent defense. And against Denver’s defense on Sunday, he was, well, far from it.
18. Chicago Bears (Last week: 16)
Record: 4-3
Caleb Williams and Chicago’s defense have been equally inconsistent this season. That doesn’t happen with serious playoff teams, and they are not one of them.
17. Houston Texans (Last week: 22)
Record: 3-4
Is C.J. Stroud back? Who knows, but what he did on Sunday against San Francisco’s defense with a ragtag group of receivers was nothing short of impressive. He still has it in him …
16. Washington Commanders (Last week: 20)
Record: 3-4
(Monday Night Football)
15. Jacksonville Jaguars (Last week: 15)
Record: 4-3
(Bye week)
14. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last week: 12)
Record: 4-3
T.J. Watt needs more help on this defense, because whew boy. Unc still got it, but you can’t rely on Aaron Rodgers winning shoot-outs each week; he needs a good defense.
13. San Francisco 49ers (Last week: 10)
Record: 5-3
The 49ers’ defense got absolutely shredded by Stroud and a depleted wide receiver core, while San Francisco’s offense couldn’t do much of anything against an elite Texans defense. They should get much healthier on the offensive side of the ball over the next two weeks, but they need to make a trade or two on defense.
12. Seattle Seahawks (Last week: 11)
Record: 5-2
(Bye week)
11. Los Angeles Chargers (Last week: 13)
Record: 5-3
Oh, look at me, I’m Justin Herbert. I ball out on national television and then sit courtside at the Lakers game with my girlfriend, Madison Beer. Whatever, man.
10. Los Angeles Rams (Last week: 8)
Record: 5-2
(Bye week)
9. Kansas City Chiefs (Last week: 7)
Record: 4-3
(Monday Night Football)
8. New England Patriots (Last week: 14)
Record: 6-2
Drake Maye is a legitimate MVP candidate and just torched arguably the best defense in football. He and the Pats have arrived, and they are legit.
7. Denver Broncos (Last week: 9)
Record: 6-2
All-around dominance by Denver, who thrashed a horrible Dallas defense by way of J.K. Dobbins and Bo Nix. All systems go for one of the hottest teams in football.
6. Buffalo Bills (Last week: 6)
Record: 5-2
Have mercy, James Cook. This game was over by halftime and only proceeded to get uglier by the quarter. An important win to keep pace with their division leader.
5. Green Bay Packers (Last week: 5)
Record: 5-1-1
The student becomes the master. Jordan Love showed out against his former mentor, and Tucker Kraft celebrated the holiday accordingly.
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Last week: 4)
Record: 6-2
It wasn’t an Earth-shattering performance by any means, but they head into the bye week with an important division win. Now, rest up and get healthy for the stretch run.
3. Detroit Lions (Last week: 1)
Record: 5-2
(Bye week)
2. Philadelphia Eagles (Last week: 3)
Record: 6-2
So, Philly’s all the way back. Jalen Hurts had the most Jalen Hurts stat line, while Saquon Barkley returned to form. The A.J. Brown noise will pop back up again this week, regardless of whether it should or not.
1. Indianapolis Colts (Last week: 2)
Record: 7-1
Everything about this team is so incredibly sound. It’s not a fluke with Daniel Jones — he really is a good quarterback in this system. Jonathan Taylor is the best running back in football and will be an MVP and Offensive Player of the Year candidate.
