Cincinnati Bengals postgame wrap| What went wrong in loss to Jets

Enquirer beat writer Kelsey Conway breaks down what went wrong in the Bengals’ loss to the Jets on Oct. 26.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco was asked after the team’s defense allowed the New York Jets to rally for a 39-38 Week 8 win at Paycor Stadium about how the offense shows support for defensive teammates.

“I think that slips into people’s heads,” Flacco said. “It’s hard not to (place blame). And I think it more slips into the side’s heads who feels like they’re not necessarily living up to their standard. But this is a team sport. And we’re all in this together. It’s not offense, defense, special teams. … They’re out there doing their job, but we are one. We feel this as one. So I think it’s hard to maybe not be in your head when maybe you’re that side of the ball for a given stretch. But I always try to tell people, ‘I’m so consumed with doing my job. And everybody should be so consumed with doing their job that they’re not worried about what other guys are doing.’ Put the blinders on, and go do your job. And I think when everybody can do that, that’s when you get out of those things. There’s no judging your brothers for not playing up to their expectations. … You need to play this game with confidence. And if you lose a little bit of that because you think your brothers are kinda looking at you like, ‘Oh, c’mon, like can’t you just do this?’ That’s not a good feeling to have. Hopefully we can all get across that that’s not how we should be feeling toward our teammates.”

“I don’t think there was any stepping off the gas,” Flacco added. “I really don’t. I would assume we just didn’t execute as well as maybe we wanted to.”

Flacco suffered an apparent shoulder injury after a big hit during the fourth quarter. He winced as he threw passes on the sideline, and briefly went to the locker room.

Flacco did play on the Bengals’ final offensive drive of the game, which resulted in a turnover on downs.

“Just had something happen a little bit,” Flacco told reporters after the game. “Wasn’t feeling 100 percent. So just trying to make sure I was right.”
