This week’s Monday Night Football matchup features a duel between the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Commanders. Both the Chiefs and Commandesr are capable of racking up a ton of points, but Washington is dealing with some key injuries, leaving plenty of uncertainty surrounding how this matchup will play out. Andy Reid wasted no time getting Rashee Rice involved upon his return from suspension. The Chiefs manufactured multiple touches in situations with scoring opportunities against the Raiders, and the star wideout made the most of them, finding the end zone twice. On the day, Rice hauled in seven of 10 targets for 42 yards and that pair of scores.
This isn’t a new thing for Reid and the Chiefs, as they also created goal-line opportunities for Xavier Worthy following his return from injury. However, given Rice’s standing as the top playmaker on the squad, I expect Patrick Mahomes to continue seeking him out in the end zone.
Washington surrenders the eighth-most receiving yards per game in the league, setting the stage for another huge outing for Rice.
The Chiefs’ backfield has been a mess throughout the opening half of the 2025 campaign. Patrick Mahomes has been their most efficient rusher, which isn’t exactly ideal from a long-term perspective.
However, Kansas City may have found at least one key piece to solving that puzzle in the form of rookie Brashard Smith. Smith has shown flashes as a pass-catcher over the last couple matchups, earning a season-high five targets which he turned into five catches for 42 yards against Las Vegas. Notably, he also got his first real opportunity on the ground, taking 14 carries for 39 yards. The efficiency wasn’t there, but once again signs of strong burst and upside were.
With Kareem Hunt banged up, Smith is poised to see another large workload against the Commanders. Given Andy Reid’s history of trying to put newer guys in positions to succeed, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the rookie get multiple goal-line carries.
