Jaxson Dart frustrated by how Giants were outplayed by Eagles

Jaxson Dart takes losses hard, and the Giants’ rookie was accountable, acknowledging he knows he plays a position that is judged by wins and losses.

Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered a severe ankle injury during a Week 8 loss to the Eagles. The injury occurred in the second quarter when Skattebo was tackled by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun.Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary are next on the Giants’ running back depth chart following the injury.

EAST RUTHERFORD – On the team bus ride home from Philadelphia, New York Giants coach Brian Daboll started getting texts from Cam Skattebo.

The rookie running back had to stay behind in a hospital near Lincoln Financial Field as he awaited surgery to repair the ankle injury sustained in Sunday’s 38-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The first text Daboll received Monday morning was unexpected – and it was from Skattebo.

“He’s an infectious personality. … 4:08 this morning, I got a text from him,” Daboll said Monday. “That’s Skatt.”

The Giants say Skattebo sustained a dislocated right ankle while attempting to catch a pass from rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. His lower right leg was caught underneath his body awkwardly, dealing the 23-year-old and the Giants a devastating blow in the second quarter.

“All went well,” Daboll said. “He’s recovering and obviously he’ll be missed. But, on the road to recovery.”

Skattebo was discharged from the hospital Monday afternoon and the Giants said in a statement that his rehab will begin immediately.

“Thank you everyone for the support!! Surgery went well,” Skattebo wrote on social media. “I just want to thank the city of Philly for taking the best care of me. Every moment I spent in the hospital with family and friends I felt loved and supported in every way thank you to the doctors, surgeons, and staff that did their best work on me. This is just the beginning of my journey and I can’t wait to show you guys all about it!!! GOD has a plan for me , stick the course and it will all work itself out, BRB.”

A member of the Giants’ training staff also stayed overnight with Skattebo.

They also had a surprise visitor in his hospital room Monday: Dom DiSandro, the Eagles’ head of security, stopped by with pizza and cheesesteaks for Skattebo, family and friends.

Cam Skattebo injury update

Cam Skattebo’s injury occurred during the second quarter of the Giants’ 38-20 loss to the Eagles in Week 8.

Skattebo was twisted to the ground by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun while trying to bring a middle-of-the-field pass from Dart. He was taken to the ground, and when Skattebo sat up, his right ankle was facing the wrong direction.

Skattebo was tended to by Giants medical staff on the field after his injury. He was then carted into the locker room with his right leg in an air cast, and then transported via ambulance to an area hospital.

The Giants later ruled Skattebo out for the game before announcing he had been taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Cam Skattebo: What is the recovery timetable?

No two players are the same in terms of injury, of course. But Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a similar ankle injury in October 2020 and made a full recovery, returning to play from the start of the following regular season. Prescott endured several months of rehabilitation to allow the bone, dislocation wound and ligaments to heal.

Who are Cam Skattebo’s backups on Giants?

The expectation is now that Tyrone Tracy returns to the top of the depth chart, and the Giants have not lost confidence in the second-year pro who was the starter prior to dislocating his shoulder in Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Veteran Devin Singletary will also be counted on to contribute. Turbo Miller had a strong preseason, proving his explosiveness can be impactful. He is on the practice squad and could ultimately be added to the active roster.

Along with his 839 yards on the ground last season, Tracy also added 284 receiving yards, which gave him 1,123 total yards from scrimmage. Tracy and wide receiver Malik Nabers became just the third rookie duo in NFL history to each have 1,000+ yards from scrimmage.

Tracy runs well through traffic, exploding through creases and putting pressure on defenders at the second and third levels. He was more purposeful this summer, hoping to build on what he did as a rookie.

Asked for details on how he has improved as a running back this summer, Tracy pointed to his football IQ and his confidence, admitting: “It was a little bit of, ‘Am I good enough to play at this level?’ This year, I have the reassurance and the confidence to know that I can do this.”
