NFL Overreactions Week 8: Green Bay tops Rodgers, Fields sparks Jets
USA TODAY Sports’ Prince Grimes ‘overreacts’ to some of the best games from Sunday’s Week 8 slate.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs (4-3) look to keep their winning ways rolling when they defend home turf against the Washington Commanders (3-4) on “Monday Night Football” in Week 8.
But tonight’s quarterback matchup probably isn’t the one that NFL schedule makers had in mind when the game was inked. Yes, Mahomes is a draw in the highest sense of the word, but across the field was supposed to be Jayden Daniels.
Unfortunately for viewers – and more importantly, the Commanders – Daniels is again dealing with an injury that has forced him out of tonight’s matchup, leaving QB1 responsibilities to Marcus Mariota.
Mariota is entering his third start of the 2025 season in relief of Daniels, who missed a pair of games earlier in the season with a knee ailment. Now, Mariota gets his next shot to lead the Commanders to a much-needed win.
USA TODAY Sports will provide live updates, highlights, scoring plays and more from the “Monday Night Football” matchup below. All times are Eastern.

Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was ruled one yard short after taking a direct snap on a first-and-goal play on the Commanders’ 8. Hunt punched in the one-yard touchdown run on the following play to score the first points of the “Monday Night Football” clash.
Kansas City leads 7-0 with 5:46 left in the first half.
The Commanders got the ball down to the Chiefs’ 28-yard line but elected to go for it on fourth-and-1 instead of trying a 45-yard field goal with fill-in kicker Matthew Wright.
Quarterback Marcus Mariota felt heavy pressure from Kansas City’s front and threw a pass away. The Chiefs will begin their third possession on their own 28-yard line with 10:25 left in the first half.
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce tipped Mahomes’ pass up into the air, and Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner was in the right spot to come down with the interception.
Neither team has gone a full possession without turning the ball over.
Washington will begin its third possession of the game on its own 41-yard line with 13 minutes left in the half.
Three turnovers — two interceptions and a turnover on downs — led to a scoreless first quarter in Kansas City.
The Chiefs will have the ball on their own 41-yard line and a third-and-4 play to start the second quarter.
Commanders tight end Zach Ertz was ruled to be five inches short of a first down after his fourth-down catch and an ensuing virtual measurement.
The Chiefs will get the ball a second time, starting at their own 35 with just under one minute to play in the first quarter.
The Commanders have announced that their starting left tackle is questionable to return with a hamstring injury. Tunsil went to the locker room with a couple of team trainers after Washington’s first offensive drive.
Brandon Coleman, who started 12 games at left tackle for the Commanders last year, is in at left tackle on Washington’s second offensive possession.
Back-to-back interceptions to open the Week 8 edition of “Monday Night Football.” Nine plays after the Chiefs intercepted Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota, Commanders cornerback Marshon Lattimore picked off Mahomes.
Lattimore sat on wide receiver Hollywood Brown’s route near the sideline and jumped in front of the pass to give Washington its second possession.
The Commanders will start their second drive on their own 7-yard line with 5:35 left in the first quarter.
ESPN cameras caught Commanders starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil walking back to the locker room with a couple of team trainers. He is questionable to return with a hamstring injury.
Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna was at the right place at the right time. Mariota’s quick throw to Samuel popped straight upwards off the receiver, and Danna collected the tipped ball for his first career interception.
The Chiefs will begin their first possession of the night on their own 32-yard line with 9:42 left in the first quarter.
Yes, Luke McCaffrey is Christian McCaffrey’s younger brother and the youngest son of three-time Super Bowl champion Ed McCaffrey.
Luke McCaffrey was a third-round selection by the Commanders in the 2024 NFL Draft. He began his collegiate career as a quarterback for Nebraska, but transferred to Rice and became a wide receiver in 2021.
The former third-round pick has taken over as Washington’s leading kick return specialist in the 2025 season after slowly building up his role on special teams late last season.
