Week 8’s “Monday Night Football” matchup features a matchup of teams heading in opposite directions when the Washington Commanders (3-4) meet the Kansas City Chiefs (4-3) at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
After starting the season 2-3, the Chiefs have won two in a row and jumped back into the AFC playoff hunt. In contrast, the Commanders have lost two in a row and will be without quarterback Jayden Daniels on Monday night due to a hamstring injury. Either way, one streak will continue on MNF.

Washington took it on the chin against division rival Dallas last week, as their defense allowed the Cowboys’ offense to accumulate 409 total yards en route to a 44-22 blowout. Offensively, Jayden Daniels was 12 for 22 for 156 yards passing and one touchdown before leaving the game with a hamstring injury that has him ruled out against KC. The Commanders will need to find a way to outduel the Chiefs with Marcus Mariota under center, who’s gone 1-1 in two starts this year.
Kansas City is surging and looking to add a third consecutive win to its resume against Washington in Week 8. Patrick Mahomes brought his A game against the Raiders, passing for 286 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s 31-0 shutout victory. The Chiefs’ defense held the Raiders to 95 total yards and just 30 offensive plays. KC will be hard to beat playing lights out like this.
Commanders-Chiefs start time: 8:15 p.m. ET

The Commanders have tied the game.
Officials correctly determined that Terry McLaurin got both feet down with possession of the ball in the end zone on a rainbow pass from Marcus Mariota. The Commanders have tied the game, 7-7 with 58 seconds remaining in the half.
A great toe tap from the veteran receiver. Per ESPN, it’s his third toe-tap touchdown since 2024, tied with Ja’Marr Chase for the most in the NFL.

Terry McLaurin made what looks like a real nice sideline grab in the end zone for a touchdown. But the side judge ruled that that he didn’t get both feet down with possession.
It looks a lot like he did, though. We’ll see if they get this right on replay review.

Rashee Rice thought he had a touchdown on a 7-yard run from the wildcat. But officials overturned the score upon review as he was down just short of the goal line, and the Chiefs gave it to Kareem Hunt on second-and-goal.
Hunt got into the end zone for the first score of the game and a 7-0 Kansas City lead late in the second quarter.

Five possessions. Five turnovers. Zero points.
The Commanders just went for it on fourth-and-1, and Marcus Mariota threw a hopeless deep ball under pressure. That’s now two straight turnovers on downs for Washington after an interception on its first drive.
Patrick Mahomes will try to avoid an interception on Kansas City’s first three possessions next.

This game is officially sloppy. Patrick Mahomes just threw his second interception, this one off the hands of tight end Travis Kelce and into those of Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner.
Like Marcus Mariota’s pick on the first drive of the game, this one’s not on Mahomes. In four possessions, we’re up to three interceptions and a turnover on downs. And zero points with 12:59 remaining in the second quarter.

Virtual measurement is not a perfect technology. And there’s a chance it got this one wrong. Sure looks to the naked eye like Zach Ertz got a first down here.

Marcus Mariota took a sack on third-and-3, and the Commanders went for it on fourth-and-6.
Mariota delivered a strike to tight end Zach Ertz short of the sticks and Ertz got tackled close enough to the line of gain for a virtual measurement. The measurement ruled Ertz just short, and the Chiefs take over on downs at their own 35.

Everybody gets a red zone turnover.
The Chiefs were driving and threatening to score after Deebo Samuel’s drop resulted in an interception on the other end. But Marson Lattimore undercut a Patrick Mahomes sideline pass to Hollywood Brown inside the 10-yard line for a sensational interception.
That’s a turnover for each team in two possessions. The game remains in a scoreless tie.

More bad news for the Commanders.
Left tackle Laremy Tunsil is headed to the locker room with a hamstring injury. He’s questionable to return.

Washington was off to just the start it needed with a methodical drive downfield into the red zone on the game’s opening possession.
But a miscue by Deebo Samuel flipped the script. Samuel took his eye off the ball on a screen pass, and it bounced off his hands into those of Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna.
Marcus Mariota gets credited with the tough-luck interception. And a Washington team needing near perfection to compete without Jayden Daniels made the worse kind of mistake on its opening drive.

It’s almost time for kickoff. The Chiefs won the coin toss and deferred.
Washington will have the ball first. Can Marcus Mariota step up in place of injured quarterback Jayden Daniels? He’ll need to if the Commanders have any hope of competing against the Chiefs.

Veteran tight end Zach Ertz has a chance to join some of the all-time greats at the position, as he’d become just the sixth tight end in history with 800 career catches, ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes.
He’d join Hall of Fame tight ends Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates and Shannon Sharpe, as well as four-time All-Pro Travis Kelce and two-time All-Pro Jason Witten as the only players to accomplish the feat.
Ertz’s 13-year career has spanned three different teams, including a nine-season stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, who selected him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He ranks second in franchise history with 579 catches and fifth in Eagles history with 6,267 receiving yards.
Ertz has had two-plus receptions in all but one game so far this season.

Veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota is set to get his third start of the season for the Washington Commanders in Week 8 in place of second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is out with a hamstring injury.
Daniels previously missed Weeks 3 and 4 with a hamstring injury prior to making a return, but suffered another injury last week that will force him out of another contest. Though he’ll be out against the Kansas City Chiefs, reports were positive after Daniels underwent an MRI to evaluate the hamstring issue, with the consensus being that he avoided a long-term injury.
Mariota threw for 363 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 INT in his two starts, adding another 60 yards and a score on the ground combined in his first two starts this season.
The good news — Mariota will have wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel Sr. available, as McLaurin plays his first game since Week 3, returning from a quad injury. Samuel missed Week 7 with a heel issue. Both were left off the final injury report with no injury designation for the game after practicing in full on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without two starting offensive linemen in Week 8, as left tackle Josh Simmons remains away from the team attending to a personal matter and right guard Trey Smith is out with a back injury suffered in Week 7.
Simmons was ruled out early, while Smith had been listed as doubtful after missing a whole week of practice leading up to Monday night’s game.
Veteran Jaylon Moore has started at left tackle in each of the past two weeks, while Mike Caliendo will start at right guard.
Caliendo had an impressive outing in relief of Smith following his injury in Week 7, not allowing a single pressure on Patrick Mahomes in 30 pass-blocking opportunities per PFF. Moore has allowed five pressures in 78 opportunities, including four hurries and a sack.

The Kansas City Chiefs are 11.5-point home favorites over the Washington Commanders in Week 8 at BetMGM, and Yahoo Sports’ Matt Russell is taking the Commanders to cover despite Jayden Daniels being sidelined with a hamstring injury.
He writes:
“Defensively, it’s been tough for the Commanders, but their metrics are better than public perception after getting walked down the field repeatedly by the Cowboys, one of the best offensive teams in the league. Filtered for high-leverage plays and blowout game situations, the Commanders’ defense is league-average in Expected Points Added per Play (EPA/play) against opponent drop-backs. While they’re slightly below-average against the run, that’s far from the Chiefs’ specialty anyway.
Finally, Kansas City can be had against the run, as only the Bills and Dolphins are worse. While some of it has to do with the threat of Jayden Daniels on the ground, the Commanders lead the NFL in yards per carry, offensive EPA/play on run plays and are second to Carolina in rushing success rate. Mariota’s done a good enough job imitating that element of Daniels’ game with 94 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Mix in what McLaurin and Samuel provide to boost the under-performing pass game, and the Commanders should be able to keep up enough so that the fourth quarter matters this week — and the Chiefs do just enough to secure the win by 7-10 points.”
