Quarterback Brock Purdy’s status remains up in the air for the 49ers’ Week 9 game against the New York Giants, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday.
“I think it’s too early to say. I don’t think it’s a long shot, but I know he is doing better,” Shanahan said of Purdy. “We’ll see how he’s doing Wednesday. Hopefully, if he’s doing good, he’ll get in some reps.”
The 49ers return to action on Sunday against the Giants, who are 2-6 on the season after their 38-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. The artificial playing surface at the Giants’ home stadium, MetLife Stadium, will have no impact on the decision, Shanahan said.
Purdy has missed the past four games after aggravating an injury to his right big toe.
He originally sustained the “turf toe” injury—or a hyperextended toe—in the 49ers’ Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. He missed the next two games before returning to action in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Purdy returned to limited practice the last two weeks but was not cleared to return to action. He is expected to return to at least limited practice on Wednesday, and his progress will be monitored to determine his timetable for returning to action.
Purdy traveled to Houston with his teammates and watched the team’s 26-15 loss to the Texans from the sideline. He was ruled out from playing on Friday, before the 49ers departed on the trip.
Mac Jones, a fifth-year pro, has started six games this season. The 49ers are 4-2 in Jones’ starts. He has completed 149 of 226 pass attempts (65.9 percent) for 1,597 yards with eight touchdowns, five interceptions and a passer rating of 89.0.
