Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had a subpar performance for the second straight week, although his performance in the loss to the Baltimore Ravens brought more criticism. In the loss to Baltimore, Williams did not record a touchdown and threw his third interception of the season while passing for 285 yards.
Not finding the end zone for Williams is certainly an issue, especially when the team was down in enemy territory early in the game but failed to score a touchdown and had to settle for two field goals. Williams’ costly interception came late in the fourth quarter on a pass intended for wide receiver Rome Odunze, that all but sealed the loss for Chicago.

On Monday, head coach Ben Johnson spoke about the performance of his young quarterback, and while there was plenty of room for criticism, he actually praised Williams and his growth.
“He played better this game than I think he had the previous two,” Johnson said, via ESPN 1000. “When you look at it, all 60 minutes, and I’m not saying it’s perfect. I actually came away, from watching the tape this morning, encouraged that we took a step in the right direction here this week. I know for some people it’s hard maybe rationalize because the result wasn’t there. But yeah, I saw tangible growth from him. He’s working his ass off.”
Williams definitely has to play better in order for the Bears to find success, but it’s not all negative. It’s a simple narrative to attack after a loss that it’s all on him, but in the big picture, long-term standpoint that Johnson has, Williams has shown plenty of growth and development each and every week.
