TEMPE – Fresh off a Week 8 bye, the Arizona Cardinals are in need of a shot in the arm as they try to snap a five-game losing streak when they visit the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on “Monday Night Football.”
Quarterback Kyler Murray might be just the guy to give the team a jab.
After missing the last two weeks because of a foot injury he sustained in a loss to Tennessee, Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said Tuesday Oct. 28 that Murray is “doing better” and was expected to practice.
While Gannon was noncommittal regarding his quarterback’s status for Week 9, there were reports Monday that Murray will return against the Cowboys, barring any setbacks at practice this week.

Through the five games he has played, the 28-year-old Murray has not been at his best this season. He is generating 6 yards per pass attempt this season and his 192.4 yards per game passing is the lowest average of his career. He has the second lowest quarterback rating of his career at 88.6 and the highest sack percentage of his career at 9.04%. Even his rushing success percentage is the lowest of his career at 41.4%.
On the other hand – if he returns – Murray will face a Dallas defense that also has struggled this season, particularly in the departments Murray will be looking to improve upon. The Cowboys rank 31st in the league in both passing yards per attempt at 7.7 per pass and yards per game through the air, where they are at a 258.6-yards per game clip. The Cowboys are 25th in sack percentage at 5.32%.
Thus, there is an opportunity for Murray to capitalize on the specific weaknesses of the Dallas defense in his bid to turn the season.
After a promising 2-0 start, the season has become a nightmare for the Cardinals.
Yet despite having lost their last five games, with the previous three losses coming in historic fashion by becoming the first team in NFL history to lose three straight games after holding a lead of seven points or more entering the fourth quarter, Gannon indicated that Cardinals fans should not expect wholesale changes coming out of the bye.
“It is a bunch of different things, but there is nothing really drastic to me,” Gannon said of potential adjustments. “If we didn’t look like we looked, with the same record, then you could think about making some big-time, drastic changes – which I have been a part of …, too. I don’t think that was the answer for us going forward. I just want us to play a little bit better, and coach a little bit better.”
His players appear to be on board with the plan.
“We are a team that goes and analyzes everything, sees where we messed up throughout the game and come back and make adjustments off that,” said linebacker Zaven Collins. “The coaches came back (after the bye) with packages for us to go over what we need to work on as a unit and as individuals.

“It is not like there is a huge overhaul of things we need to change, just minor tweaks here and there.”
While the on-field adjustments will be minimal this week, Murray’s potential return against the Cowboys could be a significant boost for the Cardinals.
Beyond the chance to right the ship against a struggling defense, Murray will have a highly impressive streak to preserve Monday if he is back in the shotgun for the Cardinals.
For Murray, a native of Bedford, Texas, which is about 24 miles from Dallas and a mere 9 miles from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Monday is an opportunity to keep a better streak alive.
He has never lost in “Jerry World.”
Murray boasts a perfect 9-0 record when playing at AT&T Stadium, nicknamed “Jerry World” for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. His streak includes five victories during a storied, undefeated high school career at Allen High School, a win over Arkansas while at Texas A&M, a Big 12 Championship triumph over Texas during his 2018 Heisman-winning season for Oklahoma and two wins over the Cowboys since entering the NFL, first in 2020 and again in 2022.
The Cardinals were not looking to reinvent themselves during the bye week. Instead, they are depending on minor tweaks – and possibly a major return to Dallas from their quarterback – to provide the catalyst for the remainder of the season.
