After the 32-0 victory over Walther Christian Academy at Washington on Friday Oct. 24, the West Hancock football was 6-3 after the regular season. Saturday night, Oct. 25, the Titans found out who their first round opponent will be in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) field of 32 in Class 2A. West Hancock will match-up with Wilmington (8-1) on the road Saturday, Nov. 1, at 3 p.m.
West Hancock Head Coach Coy Dorothy wasn’t surprised.
“They look the part. They are solid, fast and physical,” he said. “It is going to be a test. They are historically good and have two of the last four Class 2A titles and lost in the 3A semifinals last season. We will give them our best game and see where it goes. I think we will be able to move the football on them. We have to limit our penalties and turnovers on offense. And if we can force a few turnovers on defense I like our shot. And we believe we have the ability to win and now the kids have to go out and get the job done. We are going in with the mindset of going 1-0 and then look to the future after Saturday afternoon.”
A win Saturday would put The Titans at home the following Saturday.
Wilmington enters the contest having won its last eight games after dropping the season opener back on Aug. 29 to Morris, 27-20. They averaged 44.2 points a game entering the playoffs and gave up 8.9 points a game. The Titans averaged 32.44 points during the regular season while giving up 24.4 points a game and are riding a five-game win streak entering the IHSA Class 2A playoffs. All 32 teams enter week one of the postseason 0-0 and will try to string together four straight wins over the next few weeks to get to the IHSA football state finals at Illinois State University Hancock Stadium on Nov. 28 at 10 a.m.
