Liam Coen highlighted four areas of emphasis for the Jaguars during the bye week.

During the Jacksonville Jaguars’ bye week, there were four points of emphasis that Liam Coen prioritized and focused on.

As Coen described during his Monday press conference, one of those points was on executing better on first and second downs.

Through seven games, the Jaguars‘ average distance to gain on second down is 8.16 yards. On third downs, it is 7.83 yards.

Consistently being in those long down-and-distance situations is a tough way to live in the NFL with offenses becoming pass-heavy and predictable.

The next point of emphasis was on finding ways to get the ball to their best players in space. YAC turns high percentage completions into chunk plays for an offense.

Coen also mentioned before the bye that moving forward, the Jaguars “are going to play the best 11 as much as humanly possible after this bye.”

Third on Coen’s to-do list was generating more pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Going into the bye week, Jacksonville ranked 24th in ESPN’s pass rush win rate metric, which tells us that they aren’t winning their matchups quickly enough. The Jaguars were also tied for the fewest sacks in football.

Lastly, Coen said that the Jacksonville defense has to do a better job at limiting explosive plays. The Jaguars’ explosive play rate allowed ranked in the bottom half of the NFL going into Week 8.

“You look at all those things and so much goes into it,” Coen said. “These guys did a lot of work as a staff and some of those things you want to get tweaked, but we’re not going to go and reinvent the wheel.”
