NFL Overreactions Week 8: Green Bay tops Rodgers, Fields sparks Jets
USA TODAY Sports’ Prince Grimes ‘overreacts’ to some of the best games from Sunday’s Week 8 slate.
The Dallas Cowboys still seem to be in the market for defensive help, and per owner Jerry Jones, their 44-24 defensive debacle at Denver hasn’t changed the fact that Dallas appears to be a buyer, not a seller, as the trade deadline approaches.
There is now confirmation that Dallas inquired about Cincinnati’s Trey Hendrickson and the Las Vegas Raiders‘ Maxx Crosby, and also confirmation that both teams gave Dallas a firm no.
As of Tuesday morning, defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus was still employed by the Dallas Cowboys, a pretty good indication he’ll survive another week. Here’s what Dallas is up to.
NFL trade deadline
The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. MT/3 p.m. CT.
Dallas Cowboys trade rumors: Maxx Crosby, Trey Hendrickson
In typical fashion, owner Jerry Jones reiterated after the loss at Denver that Dallas could be in the market to add defensive help via trade.
“A loss is discouraging, but as far as my temperament, if I saw a proposition for us to help this team, no matter what this score was today, I would look at it on the merits of this team,” Jones said. “If you’re talking about trading for a player or trading a player, I’d completely look at it on the merits of this team, both for next week or the weeks after or for the longer term.
“No, today would not affect decisions on trading for a player.”
Per a report from Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer, Dallas inquired about edge rushers Maxx Crosby (Las Vegas Raiders) and Trey Henrickson (Cincinnati Bengals) and were rebuffed by both teams. Crosby has made clear he wants to stay with the Raiders.
“Dallas is trying. They’ve actually called around,” Glazer reported. “They called the Raiders for Maxx Crosby, was told no. They called the Bengals for Trey Hendrickson, was told no. They are calling around for help on defense.”
Per the Cowboys blog The Landry Hat, other potential pass rushers the Cowboys could look at are the Dolphins duo of Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb, the Jets’ Jermaine Johnson, the Titans’ Arden Key, and the Falcons’ Arnold Ebiketie.
Trevon Diggs
The Dallas cornerback Trevon Diggs has been moved to the injured reserve, so he’s not eligible to play again until the Thanksgiving game against the Kansas City Chiefs. That has fueled speculation that Dallas may want to part ways with Diggs via a trade, though it’s certainly unclear what, if any, value he would have on the trade market.
At any rate, here is what coach Brian Schottenheimer said of Diggs and moving him to the IR:
“We felt like the best interest of the team and Trevon was to get him back healthy,” Schottenheimer said. “He missed last game, he was gonna miss this game. No, he’s not through Phase 1 of concussion protocol yet [And] the knee has been problematic throughout the season. …
“He’s a really good player. and we just want to get him back and get him healthy, and to be able to help us finish strong, because we feel like this thing’s going to come down to the end of the season.”
Dallas Cowboys next game
The Cowboys play the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football on Nov. 3. Kickoff is at 6:15 p.m. MT/7:15 p.m. CT on ABC and ESPN.
Matt Eberflus
The Dallas Cowboys’ embattled defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus received the dreaded vote of confidence from Jones after Dallas’ defensive implosion against Denver.
“Where he does know how is to evaluate what he’s trying to do,” Jones told the Dallas Morning News when asked if he still has faith in Eberflus. “And he’s a good coach in coaching them up and correcting their mistakes and getting him in there. I’ve seen him take players and units and they improve and get better as he coaches them. I’ve seen that. I’ve seen it more than once. He’s a good coach.”
