Coach Kyle Shanahan doesn’t expect to lose 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings before the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline.

However, if that were to happen, Shanahan would be caught off guard.

“I’d be very surprised if Jauan wasn’t on our team throughout this year,” Shanahan told reporters Wednesday ahead of San Francisco’s Week 9 matchup against the New York Giants.

Jennings, 28, had a breakout 2024 NFL season, racking up 77 receptions, 975 receiving yards and six touchdowns, encouraging the wideout to demand a raise ahead of the 2025 season.

After a notable back and forth with the 49ers brass, both parties came to an agreement to add $3 million in play-time incentives to Jennings’ contract this offseason.

But 2025 has been nothing like 2024 for Jennings, who has been weighed down by injuries for the first half of the season, including having to play with five broken ribs

Shanahan hopes his receiver, with whom he had a sideline disagreement with during San Francisco’s Week 6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will continue to show improvement.

“Jauan has been really hurt all year,” Shanahan added. “I think he’s getting better. I think last week was a step in the right direction, but hopefully he’ll be better this week. Jauan has been compromised on a lot of things.”

As for ESPN analyst Jeremy Fowler, there’s plenty of reasons to think Jennings, who already had asked for a trade out of San Francisco over the offseason, could be on his way out of the Bay Area soon.

“Much is made of Jakobi Meyers’ trade prospects out of Las Vegas, but let’s not forget about San Francisco’s Jauan Jennings, who also asked for a trade in the offseason over the lack of a new deal,” Fowler wrote.

“Despite nearly 1,000 yards in 2024, Jennings is off to a slower start this season, ranking fifth on the 49ers in receiving (212). Both sides could use a fresh start.”

Similar to the situation over the summer, there is ongoing speculation about Jennings’ future with the 49ers. Perhaps Shanahan’s remarks can deliver some peace of mind to the Faithful, though.
