The NFL as a league has a passion for honoring military families, both active and veterans. Throughout the season, both on and off the field, NFL teams and players host, participate in, and attend events that honor, empower, and connect these heroic families. Once a year, each NFL team nominates a player, coach, staff member, or other NFL community member for the Salute to Service Award.

The NFL’s Salute to Service “is the NFL’s ongoing commitment to honor, empower, and connect with U.S. service members, veterans, and their families. Since 2011, it has raised over $75 million through partnerships with leading organizations, including the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF), Pat Tillman Foundation (PTF), Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), United Service Organizations (USO) and Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP).

The Salute to Service Award, presented by USAA, “acknowledges the exceptional efforts by members of the NFL community to honor and support U.S. service members, veterans, and their families.”

This year, the Tennessee Titans have nominated third-year cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. for this award in recognition of his efforts to support military families.

Baker grew up in a military household; both of his parents are retired U.S. Army veterans, so he understands firsthand the struggles these families face on a daily basis. Going long stretches without seeing one parent or the other, or sometimes both, he can empathize in a way that only a military family would understand.

While a member of the Titans, Baker regularly attends Titans’ outreach events, he’s attended veteran lunches and other events. During a Salute to Service game, Baker honored both of his parents by naming them “12th Titans” in a symbolic gesture of gratitude.

The Salute to Service award is voted on by fans, so go vote for Darrell Baker, as he certainly embodies everything this award stands for.
