The New York Jets have added to their wide receiver room by acquiring John Metchie III.

Ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline on Nov. 4, Metchie comes to New York via a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles which saw cornerback Michael Carter II head in the opposite direction.

In landing the 25-year-old, who are the Jets getting?

Here are five things to know about the Jets’ newest wide receiver:

A real battle

Metchie caught national NFL news as a rookie for the worst reason. He was diagnosed with leukemia in July of 2022 after that year’s draft.

Metchie was a second-round selection of the Houston Texans out of Alabama and the team and football world rallied around him and his recovery. Metchie did unfortunately lose his rookie season because of it.

Not his first trade

Perhaps Metchie can settle in with the Jets quicker than most because he’s simply done this before. This past August, Metchie was traded by the Texans to the Eagles. Metchie knows how to handle being traded.

A unique upbringing

Metchie was born in Taiwan and lived in Ghana before spending most of his youth in Canada. He came to the United States to play high school football in Maryland and then New Jersey.

Contract status

Metchie will essentially have an opportunity to show his stuff to the Jets for the next nine games. After the 2025 season, he’s a restricted free agent so if the team likes him, they’ll easily be able to keep him around.

His game

Metchie’s best run came in 2024. In 13 games played (3 starts), Metchie had 24 catches for 254 yards and a touchdown. There is not much there yet in terms of his NFL career, but Metchie is a versatile receiver and will have plenty of opportunity to secure a roster spot with the Jets’ lack of receiver depth.

Metchie only had four catches and 18 yards with the Eagles this season.
