The San Francisco 49ers‘ offseason roster tweaking continued Tuesday when the club announced the addition of a new undrafted rookie cornerback.

CB Derrick Canteen signed a three-year deal with San Francisco as their seventh UDFA addition after impressing in a tryout at rookie minicamp. To make room on their 90-man roster the 49ers waived safety Quindell Johnson.

Canteen, 24, spent his six college seasons at three schools including four years with Georgia Southern, one at Virginia Tech and his final one at Cincinnati. In 2024 with the Bearcats he started 12 games and posted 44 taackles, three tackles for loss, five pass breakups and an interception.

He enters a CB room that has a slew of question marks in the back end of the depth chart. Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green figure to snag two of the starting jobs. Beyond that the third starting job and an additional two or three roster spots are up for grabs. Canteen will have a steep road to a roster spot as a UDFA who joined the club late. He’s also the second UDFA CB to sign with San Francisco. BYU’s Jakob Robinson also agreed to a deal with the 49ers following this year’s NFL draft.

In six seasons of college Canteen played in 54 games with 40 starts and racked up 204 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 32 pass breakups and nine interceptions.
