There’s been lots of speculation surrounding the future of New York Jets running back Breece Hall.

Hall is on an expiring contract and the NFL trade deadline is on November 4th. Though trading him has been positioned as the largely expected outcome, signing him to an extension should garner consideration as the alternative outcome.

Hall has been explosive and productive for the Jets’ offense this season. In Sunday’s thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, he rushed for a season-high 133 yards and two touchdowns. Hall averaged 7.8 yards per carry.

Throughout the campaign, Hall has rushed for 581 yards and two touchdowns via 117 carries. His midseason 5.0 yards per carry is his best per-touch average since his 2022 rookie campaign. Hall has been an ideal fit in Tanner Engstrand’s offense.

The rebuilding Jets require additional draft capital if they’re to accelerate the process of becoming a contender. That’s precisely why Hall is so widely expected to be traded. But if Darren Mougey is unimpressed by deadline chatter, why not sign Hall to an extension instead?

The Jets could select a new franchise quarterback during the 2026 NFL draft. Pairing that inexperienced signal-caller with a productive dual-threat back like Hall could ease his acclimation. Remember, Mougey doesn’t have to trade Hall. The Jets are choosing how to navigate a potential departure.

Signing Hall to an extension should be weighed versus the potential benefit of trading him.
