The New York Giants lost one of their twin engines behind a franchise resurgence in 2025 when Cam Skattebo went down with a gruesome injury against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8, and the team must now find at least a temporary replacement for the electric rookie running back.
Skattebo dislocated his ankle, fractured his fibula and ruptured his deltoid ligament on the play in question, all of which will combine to sideline him for the remainder of the regular season.
Second-year back Tyrone Tracy Jr., a fifth-round pick in 2024, is slotted as RB1 heading into the team’s Week 9 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, but the Giants have options to upgrade the position if they choose.

With the NFL trade deadline just days away (Nov. 4), New York has an abundance of pass-rushers, and it could turn one of them into a high-profile running back to fill the void Scattebo left in the offensive backfield.
“The Giants may not want to trade [Kayvon] Thibodeaux, but with Brian Burns and Abdul Carter on the roster, a team that is still realistically rebuilding has to be practical,” Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report wrote Friday. “[Chuba] Hubbard could help with the loss of Cam Skattebo to injury but also serve as a potential long-term option, and getting some draft capital as well (while dodging a $14.8 million 2026 contract year) for the disappointing Thibodeaux would make sense.”
The Carolina Panthers have gotten a surprise year out of running back Rico Dowdle, which renders Hubbard tradable, and could also use an edge-rusher after trading Burns to the Giants in 2024.
Hubbard has been somewhat hampered by injury this season, missing two of his team’s eight games. However, he produced 1,195 rushing yards and 10 TDs on 4.8 yards per carry last year. He also caught 43 passes for 171 yards and one score.
