One of the most thrilling rivalries in the NFL will be renewed at Highmark Stadium on Sunday when reigning MVP Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills (5-2) host three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs (5-3). The game will kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS, with the network’s top broadcast team of Jim Nantz, Tony Romo and Tracy Wolfson on the call.

Nantz, 66, is a legend among sports fans, who will recognize him as the lead play-by-play voice of the NFL, the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four and the Masters on CBS. Just focusing on the NFL, Nantz has called seven Super Bowls, 21 AFC Championship Games and more than 500 total games in the booth since he first went on air with CBS in 1988.

Nantz has witnessed some incredible football teams and players over the years, but one game stands out to him as the very best of those 500 and counting — and it involved the two teams he will see on Sunday.

“Those have been really epic matchups,” Nantz said of the nine times Mahomes’ Chiefs have faced Allen’s Bills, including the playoffs. “The one back in the 2022 divisional round, which was the 42-36 overtime game, was probably the best game I’ve ever seen.”

When you look back at what happened in that game, it is hard to argue with Nantz that it was an all-time classic. Allen put the Bills ahead 29-26 with less than 1:54 remaining. There were two more lead changes in the final minute, as Mahomes hit back with a quick touchdown and Allen answered with one of his own.

Kansas City got the ball back down 36-33 with 0:17 to go, but Mahomes miraculously got them in position for a game-tying field goal, and the Chiefs went on to win 42-36 in overtime.

At each twist and turn, Nantz delivered signature commentary. When Travis Kelce caught the game-winning touchdown from Mahomes, Nantz bellowed, “For the win — he caught it!”

No one will expect a repeat of that famous playoff game from 2022 on Sunday, but Nantz affirmed in his interview that Mahomes, 30, and Allen, 29, still have plenty of epic stories to write against one another. For the vast majority of them, Nantz will likely narrate.

“It always will be part of the story and part of the legacy for both of them will be that they tangled against the other,” Nantz told Adam Schein of Mad Dog Sports Radio. “They’re still young enough, this has got a lot of legs.”
