SALT LAKE CITY — The No. 2 Fremont Silverwolves narrowly escaped the second round of the 5A high school playoffs with a 31-27 win over the No. 15 Alta Hawks on Friday.
The first half was smooth sailing for Fremont. They won each of the first two quarters and led 17-13 at the break.
The Hawks turned the heat up in the third quarter, taking their first lead behind a touchdown pass to Ber Strong. After a Fremont response, they took the lead right back on the ensuing possession and led 27-24 going into the fourth.
The Silverwolves buckled down in the final quarter, holding strong on defense and regaining the lead to avoid the upset.
Fremont will face No. 7 Brighton on Friday, November 7, in the quarterfinals.
Second Round Recap For 5A Utah High School Football Playoffs
No. 17 Northridge Knights 13 @ No. 1 West Panthers 56
There was never a doubt for the West Panthers as they laid the hammer down on the Northridge Knights in the second round of the playoffs on Friday. West scored 28 points in the first quarter and followed that with 21 more in the second.
Panthers running back Louie Hamilton had an all-timer, running in six touchdowns. Quarterback Kamden Lopati had two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground.
West will face No. 9 Bountiful on Friday, November 7, in the quarterfinals.
No. 9 Bountiful Redhawks 34 @ No. 8 West Jordan Jaguars 32
The Bountiful Redhawks prevailed over the West Jordan Jaguars in a tightly contested matchup on Friday. The momentum swung in favor of the Redhawks early as they opened the game with 14 unanswered points. West Jordan stormed back with 19 points over the next two quarters.
The difference proved to be extra points, as the Jaguars went for two two-point conversions but came up short both times.
Bountiful will face No. 1 West on Friday, November 7, in the quarterfinals.
No. 13 Timpview Thunderbirds 22 @ No. 4 Orem Tigers 40
The Orem Tigers cruised to a comfortable win over the Timpview Thunderbirds at home in the second round. Orem’s consistency with the ball was the X-factor. The Tigers scored at least seven points in each quarter, while Timpview went scoreless in the third and only managed a field goal in the second.
All five of Orem’s touchdowns came from a different player. Quarterback Tayden Ka’awa had three passing touchdowns.
Orem will face No. 5 Woods Cross on Friday, November 7, in the quarterfinals.
No. 12 Olympus Titans 6 @ No. 5 Woods Cross Wildcats 13
The Woods Cross Wildcats fought tooth and nail to defeat the Olympus Titans in a defensive-minded second-round matchup. The defense did its job, holding the Titans to just two field goals on offense.
Teiyon Halbasch and Ryan Miller were the touchdown scorers for Woods Cross.
Woods Cross will face No. 4 Orem on Friday, November 7, in the quarterfinals.
No. 10 Granger Lancers 8 @ No. 7 Brighton Bengals 49
The Brighton Bengals scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters as they defeated the Granger Lancers to advance to the 5A quarterfinals.
Quarterback Ryce Palepoi and running back Cole Heemeyer accounted for all seven of the Bengals’ touchdowns. Heemeyer had three scores on the ground and Palepoi threw for the other four.
Brighton will face No. 2 Fremont on Friday, November 7, in the quarterfinals.
No. 19 Spanish Fork Dons 14 @ No. 3 Springville Red Devils 49
The Springville Red Devils continued their streak of dominance as they knocked the Spanish Fork Dons out of the playoffs in the second round on Friday. Springville scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters and tacked on the other 21 in the third.
Four different Red Devils players had a rushing TD against Spanish Fork. Tua Naufahu had three total touchdowns, two on the ground and a third through the air.
Springville will face No. 6 Box Elder on Friday, November 7, in the quarterfinals.
No. 11 West Field Longhorns 13 @ No. 6 Box Elder Bees 35
The Bow Elder Bees went up big early and never looked back in their win over the West Field Longhorns on Friday. All five of Box Elder’s touchdowns came on the ground. Judd Howells had a hat trick of rushing scores.’
All of West Field’s points came in the fourth quarter.
Box Elder will face No. 3 Springville on Friday, November 7, in the quarterfinals.
