The Tennessee Titans host the Los Angeles Chargers at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, this Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CDT in Week 9 action.
It’s another week of two teams on opposite ends of the spectrum, two teams heading in different directions. The Titans are scrambling to simply survive the season. Under interim head coach Mike McCoy, the Titans look no different than they did under Brian Callahan. Meanwhile, the Chargers are on the upswing. They are 5-3 and second in the AFC West.
In a game like this, similar to last week, fantasy options are interesting. While there are players on both teams with fantasy value, the Titans have fewer options than the Chargers. Ahead of their Week 9 matchup, let’s take a look at some fantasy players to start and sit this week.
Start: QB Justin Herbert
Forget that Herbert is prone to interceptions. Against the Titans, even if he turns the ball over, he will be on the field often enough to accrue enough points to cover that mistake. The Titans are tied for giving up the 14th-most fantasy points to quarterbacks, and Herbert had his most efficient outing against the Minnesota Vikings last week. Against a Titans team that is struggling in all aspects of its game, Herbert will slice through them with ease.
Sit: WR Elic Ayomanor
It’s clear that Ayomanor still has a role on the offense, but it’s also clear that Chimere Dike has popped up as one of Cam Ward’s top targets. Not only that, but Dike is the second-most reliable pass-catcher the Titans have (behind Chig Okonkwo). Ayomanor will still be targeted, and he might even make some plays, but for fantasy purposes, it won’t be enough.
Start: RB Kimani Vidal
The Chargers lost Najee Harris early in the season to an Achilles tear, and then Omarion Hampton went down earlier this month with an ankle injury. Vidal took over and has kept the Chargers’ running game alive, recording 117 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 carries against the Vikings in Week 8. The Titans allow the second-most fantasy points to running backs (23.25).
Sit: RB Tony Pollard
While projected to score more points than Tyjae Spears, Pollard is averaging just 3.9 yards per carry to Spears’ 5.5 yards per carry. Pollard has played in double the number of games as Spears, but if we extrapolate Spears’ productivity, he would lead the Titans right now in rushing yards. The number of touches Pollard received in Week 8 was even with Spears, but Spears is the only one who found the end zone.
Sleeper: RB Tyjae Spears
Speaking of Spears, he is on my sleeper list this week. He is widely underestimated because he tends to miss games every year due to an injury. The same can be said of this year, as he sat out four weeks on injured reserve, but upon returning to the field, he has taken off in a big way. His 5.5 yards per carry average highlights his explosiveness and his ability to navigate tight gaps. The Chargers’ run defense is mediocre, and Spears could very well exploit them on Sunday.
