At a time when the Cincinnati Bengals defense truly has nowhere to go but up, the team has made a roster move to provide the unit with some reinforcements.
The Bengals announced returning defensive end Cedric Johnson to the active roster ahead of the Week 9 game against the Chicago Bears.

In addition to that move, the Bengals signed quarterback Sean Clifford off the practice squad to the active roster, should they need an emergency third quarterback behind Joe Flacco.

The Bengals hope that Johnson can join the rotation and provide a boost to a struggling unit under Al Golden, regardless of whether Trey Hendrickson plays through his injury.
Johnson’s impending return is perhaps one reason the Bengals have yet to seek pass-rushing help. The youth movement and hoping for something from Myles Murphy and Shemar Stewart is another.

Now, Johnson gets one game to have an audition of sorts before Tuesday’s trade deadline. The defense as a whole gets one chance, too, to prove it can recover from last week’s debacle against a formerly winless team.
