With the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline fast approaching, rumors continue to circulate across the league about which players could be on the move.
At 1-7, the New York Jets have reportedly fielded inquiries about several key contributors set to hit free agency this offseason, including running back Breece Hall and linebacker Quincy Williams.
However, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, a more unexpected name could be available.
Breer reports that defensive end Micheal Clemons has been made “available” by general manager Darren Mougey, signaling that Gang Green may be open to further shakeups before the deadline.
“The Jets also have edge rushers of interest,” wrote Breer. “The team has no plans to move Will McDonald IV, but is listening on Jermaine Johnson II. Johnson has a year left on his deal after this one, and it sounds like New York would want a second-round pick for him. Veteran DE Michael Clemons is available as well, as is LB Quincy Williams.”
After a rocky start to the season, Clemons has shown steady improvement as a pass rusher in recent weeks.
Through the Jets’ first five games, the 28-year-old totaled just four quarterback pressures. Since Week 6, he has doubled that output with eight pressures, reflecting meaningful progress in his role on the defensive line.
However, tackling remains a significant weakness.
Clemons’ 27.8 tackling grade from Pro Football Focus ranks as the third-worst among edge rushers who have played at least 200 defensive snaps this season, ahead of only Buffalo’s Joey Bosa (25.8) and Arizona’s Baron Browning (27.3).
While his numbers don’t stand out, trading the Texas A&M product would leave the Jets exceedingly thin at defensive end. The next two players on the depth chart behind Clemons are Braiden McGregor and Tyler Baron, who have combined for seven pressures, barely more than half of Clemons’ total (12).
If the Jets were to explore a deal, they would likely receive a minimal return. However, with the team sitting at 1-7 and Clemons’ contract due to expire after the season, they could look to get value out of him before he walks on the open market.
