With the NFL trade deadline near, what positions could the Indianapolis Colts target as they look to bolster their roster for a strong second-half push?

Despite the loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday, the Colts are still 7-2 overall and positioned very well in the AFC playoff race.

However, like most teams, the Colts also have a roster hole or two, particularly on defense, that could be plugged with an outside addition.

If the Colts are looking to make a deal at the deadline, we recently highlighted the trade assets that they have available to help facilitate a trade.

The NFL trade deadline is November 4th at 4:00 PM ET.

Here are four position groups that could potentially interest the Colts at this year’s trade deadline.

Cornerback

The depth of this position group has repeatedly been tested due to injuries this season. Some good news is that Jaylon Jones returned on Sunday, and credit where it’s due, the secondary has done a very good job at forcing key takeaways this season. However, more consistency in coverage is still needed.

Defensive end

The Colts could use more pass rush juice opposite of Laiatu Latu. Overall, the Colts’ pressure numbers are fine, but in part, that’s a product of their opponents being pass-heavy as they try to catch up to the Indianapolis offense. Perhaps a more accurate reflection is that the Colts rank 29th in ESPN’s pass rush win rate metric.

Linebacker or Safety

I’ll lump these two together because neither is a pressing need. If the Colts are going to take a swing at the trade deadline, it should be at one of the positions mentioned above.

Linebacker was a need for much of the season, but the recent addition of Germaine Pratt has provided stability at the WILL linebacker position. The safety spot, meanwhile, is manned by Cam Bynum and Nick Cross, but with Lou Anarumo utilizing three safety looks, perhaps Ballard would like to reinforce the depth at that position.
