With the roster-building and shaping portion of the NFL offseason now behind us, what overall grade would you give GM Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts?

Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema recently went through the offseasons for all 32 NFL teams and handed out grades. When it came to the Colts, for the most part, Sikkema liked Indianapolis’ approach over the last few months, giving them a B+.

“The Colts made big splashes in the secondary, an area of concern, signing Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward,” wrote Sikkema. “They also had a very solid draft class. Quarterback is still a question mark, but they weren’t realistically going to do much more than bring in competition for Anthony Richardson via Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard.”

As highlighted, the defense, especially the Colts’ secondary, has been reshaped with the additions of Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward, not to mention that bringing in Lou Anarumo as the new defensive coordinator should provide the overall unit with a boost as well with his more aggressive and disguise-heavy scheme.

More good for the Colts was their draft class. This included addressing their biggest need with the draft’s top player at that position in Tyler Warren. Ballard also found what should be some immediate contributors in JT Tuimoloau, DJ Giddens, and Tim Smith.

Even with the uncertainty that exists at quarterback, while no major shake-up was expected, competition can hopefully help get more out of that unit.

Those were the positives. However, in my eyes, and Sikkema mentioned this as well, there still is a big unknown around the offensive line unit.

As it stands right now, Matt Goncalves looks to be the team’s starting right guard with there being little competition for him. Of course, the hope is that it will be a smooth transition for him as he makes a position change, but the point is, we don’t exactly know what that move inside is going to look like either.

So my feeling throughout this offseason has been that the prudent move would have been to create some competition for that starting spot.

Ballard and Co. clearly have plenty of faith in Goncalves, but the offensive line unit as a whole is one that the Colts have to get right. If the play up front is sub-par, I’m not sure it matters who the quarterback is.
