WHEATFIELD — “It ain’t over ’til it’s over” is a famous saying attributed to American baseball legend Yogi Berra, but Kankakee Valley’s second-round sectional football game was definitely over before it was over on Halloween night.
Hobart scored its first touchdown (of six), 15 seconds into the game after Stephen Miller caught the kick-off and ran it back 88 yards to score. The PAT failed and it was KV’s turn, but like most of the season, the Kougars were unable to move the ball.
At the six-minute mark, Hobart (9-2) again scored, this time on a six-yard run by Max Pickett after marching straight down the field. A two-point conversion with Aiden Kasch running it in made it 14-0.
The ball was again kicked to the Kats but recovered by Hobart after Brevin Whaley was unable to coral the ball that landed just in front of him. Hobart threatened to score again, but Whaley picked off a pass just outside the end zone, The Kougars were again three-and-punt, and with less than a minute left, Pickett again ran it in to score from 14 yards out. The PAT was again no good.
About a minute into the second quarter, Hobart’s Terry Earvin intercepted and Picket ran it in one play later. The two-point try failed, but the Brickies were up 26-0.
KV had two more possessions in the half, but each ended in a punt that then led to two field goal attempts by Hobart. Kicker Peter Janda made one and missed one and the teams went into the break with Hobart up 29-0.
After half-time, Hobart kicked off and KV made some progress with a long pass that set up a quarterback keeper for Parker Harrington, who ran it in from the one-yard line. The PAT failed, however, and KV was left at six points to the 29 of Hobart.
With six minutes left in the third, Aiden Kasch took off on a 35-yard scramble to score.
This time, Janda’s PAT was good and the Brickies extended their lead to 36-6. Three minutes later, Aleks Tatum found Kasch for a 29-yard pass and score to add on six more.
Janda would add another extra-point kick to finish off a 43-6 win for the Brickies, who will face Lowell (9-2) for a sectional championship on Friday night.
The running clock through the fourth quartet brought the game to a merciful end with neither team finding the end zone.
The Kougars finish with a 2-9 mark, including two losses to Hobart. KVHS opened the season at 0-7 before picking up its first win against Highland in week eight. KV’s other win came against Gary West in the first round of sectional.
