The 2025 NFL trade deadline has been one of the most hectic in recent memory, and a Washington Huskies alum found himself on the move on Tuesday.
Former first-round pick Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, who was in his first season with the Cleveland Browns after he was originally selected at No. 32 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2021 NFL draft, was sent to the Chicago Bears with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft.
Tryon, who signed a one-year, $4.7 million contract with Cleveland as a free agent after Tampa Bay chose not to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, has recorded just 9 tackles this season across eight games with the Browns. In his career, he has tallied 147 tackles, 21 for loss, and 15 sacks, and now will join a Chicago defensive line that is hoping for a pass rush boost.
The Bears lost defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, who has recorded 21 tackles and a sack this year, to a season-ending Achilles injury during their win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, and Tryon should be able to fill his role as a rotational pass rusher seamlessly.
With Chicago sitting at 5-3, which is good for third place in the NFC North, and has coach Ben Johnson half a game out of a playoff spot in his first season at the helm, general manager Ryan Poles chose to make a low-risk move that could help push the team over the edge with four games remaining against division opponents.
The move also gives Tryon an opportunity to play alongside several other UW alumni, as the Bears also house wide receiver Rome Odunze and cornerback Kyler Gordon, who is on injured reserve with a calf injury.
