The NFL trade deadline came and went on Tuesday, and to many’s surprise, the Tennessee Titans remained quiet.

For weeks, the Titans have been at the center of trade rumors that have populated network outlets and social media platforms, yet the team decided to stand pat, holding onto many of the players at the center of the chatter. In the end, Tennessee only made two deals around the deadline, trading away cornerback Roger McCreary last week and edge Dre’Mont Jones on Monday.

Multiple reports surfaced that Tennessee was in talks with teams about other players, including Calvin Ridley, Arden Key, Tony Pollard, and T’Vondre Sweat, but nothing came to fruition, and all of those players will remain with the organization. In fact, it is hard to know how many of those reports were accurate to begin with.

As Jordan Schultz reports, Tennessee is not interested in moving on from Sweat and views him as a foundational piece. Teams likely did inquire about Sweat and other players, but that doesn’t mean there was ever substantial progress made on potential deals.

The only things that are known to be true are the deals for McCreary and Jones. In both cases, Tennessee did receive some long-term value, especially in Jones’s case, who will, at worst, net the Titans a high fifth-round pick, which could easily become a fourth if he records two sacks and the Baltimore Ravens make the playoffs.

Yes, moving on from players such as McCreary and Jones can be frustrating for fans, especially since the fire sale never developed, while other rebuilding teams decided to part with top-tier players and pick up valuable draft capital.

But every situation is different, and the return may not have matched the potential long-term value. Of the players rumored to be on the trading block, only Arden Key and Chig Okonkwo were in the final year of their contracts, with the Titans controlling Ridley, Pollard, Simmons, and Sweat into the future.

Frustrations aside, the Titans did pick up some valuable draft capital through the two trades, which should be viewed as a positive. The 2025 rookie class looks solid, and allowing general manager Mike Borgonzi to continue the rebuild through the draft could pay off big in the future. The same as holding onto players such as Ridley, Simmons, and Sweat.
