The San Francisco 49ers improved their 2025 season record to 6-3 with a Week 9 victory over the New York Giants this past Sunday.
Backup quarterback Mac Jones made yet another start for San Francisco as Brock Purdy continued to recover from the nagging turf toe injury that’s kept him off the field for seven games in 2025.
Jones put forth another solid performance in the 49ers’ 34-24 win, completing 19 of his 24 pass attempts for 235 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Jones now has a 5-2 record as San Francisco’s starter, throwing for 1,832 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions with a 67.2 completion percentage through his seven starts.
On Monday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy’s turf toe injury “probably won’t fully go away all year” — raising speculation regarding San Francisco’s quarterback plans for the remainder of the 2025 season.
Shanahan was asked if Jones’ solid play has any effect on how quickly the team gets Purdy back out on the field.
“They’re not related. This is Brock’s team and if Brock’s good to go and everything and can play like Brock, there’s no decision to be made,” Shanahan said. “It’s just nice as we go through this with Brock with the uncertainty of the toe, it is cool to have someone playing as good as Mac is. But, they’re not related.”

The 49ers signed Purdy to a five-year, $265 million contract extension before the start of their 2025 campaign — clearly showing their confidence in him as their franchise quarterback of the future.
Purdy notched limited participation in practice last week and was listed as questionable heading into Sunday’s Week 9 matchup against the Giants. He was ultimately listed as the emergency third quarterback behind Jones and Adrian Martinez.
“I just want to make sure he gets a 100% better and won’t put him out there too early,” Shanahan said. “[We] thought about it as a possible backup or emergency, but I think the more time we get the better.”
The 49ers will face off against the Los Angeles Rams in a Week 10 contest this coming Sunday.
