The NFL trade deadline came and went without the Green Bay Packers moving an inch. Now, the only way for teams to improve their rosters is by getting them back from an injury, adding players via the waiver wire, or signing free agents. The Packers may be on track to do just that.
According to The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman, the Packers are “looking into the possibility of signing Asante Samuel Jr.”

The 26-year-old former second-round pick was recently cleared for football activity after a spinal fusion surgery that took place in April. The former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback started 47 of his 50 NFL appearances, recording 176 tackles, 37 pass deflections, a fumble recovery, and six interceptions.
While the Packers do have interest, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Panthers, Packers, and Vikings are all set to visit with Samuel, but Carolina is up first. Now healthy for the first time this season, Samuel is considered the top free agent cornerback available, and he appears to be prioritizing the opportunity to join a playoff contender.
Chances are, he’ll only sign a one-year contract, but it’s possible teams will try to get aggressive and lock the corner down for multiple seasons. Though, since Samuel is coming off a serious surgery, he may have and/or want to prove himself, giving him a chance at a bigger payday this offseason. Either way, expect Samuel to make his decision fairly quickly so he can start learning the playbook and get back on the field as soon as possible.
