NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) — The Tennessee Titans enter their bye week with a disappointing 1-8 record, but General Manager Mike Borgonzi has finally shed light on some of the team’s recent moves, particularly the controversial September trade of cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr.

Borgonzi, who had been silent on the matter, addressed the media Wednesday about the decision to send Brownlee Jr. and a 2024 fifth-round pick to the New York Jets. The trade has severely impacted the Titans’ cornerback depth, with all three opening-day starters no longer in rotation.

Borgonzi explained the move as part of the team’s “constant evaluation mode,” a process of analyzing players’ scheme and culture fit. He indicated that Brownlee Jr. did not align with their vision.

“I’m aware — it was controversial around here because he’s a young player that was ascending,” Borgonzi said. “I like Jarvis and I think he’s going to be a really good player in this league. We thought at the time, just some of the habits weren’t conducive to building the culture right now.”

While Borgonzi did not detail specific habits that led to the trade, he emphasized the traits he desires in players: a “team first mentality, attention to detail, and the willingness to get better everyday.” He added, “I wish Jarvis nothing but the best.”

The Titans’ struggles continue as they look to redefine their team culture and on-field performance.
