The 49ers appear to be interested in adding veteran depth to their secondary.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that San Francisco is one of six teams scheduled to host cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. on a visit.

Samuel spent four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers after the franchise selected him with the No. 47 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Florida State. Over his three full regular seasons, Samuel recorded 163 combined tackles, 35 passes defensed, six interceptions and one fumble recovery.

He played in just four games last season due to self-described “stingers” in both shoulders and underwent a spinal fusion procedure in April to address the discomfort he admittedly has dealt with since birth. Samuel collected 13 tackles and two passes defensed before hitting the injured reserve.

The 26-year-old was expected to be one of the top free-agent corners before his procedure. He started in 47 of 51 career games, making his mark when picking off Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence three times in the 2023 AFC Divisional Round.

San Francisco could use help in its secondary, despite not making any moves to address it before Tuesday’s 2025 NFL trade deadline.

Led by key veteran Deommodore Lenoir, the young 49ers currently allow the 13th-most passing yards per game with 223.7; San Francisco’s entire defense allows the 16th-most total yards per game with 332.6.

Among the six teams listed, the 49ers clearly need healthy bodies the most — all over the field.
