The Detroit Lions didn’t get help for their pass rush at Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. They have some coming from within.
The Lions opened defensive end Josh Paschal’s return-to-practice window Wednesday, No. 5, after Paschal missed the first eight games of the season with a back injury.
Paschal remains a few weeks away from playing in games – the Lions have until Nov. 26 to put him on the 53-man roster or return him to the nonfootball injury list for the rest of the year – but that return should help a front that has played most of the year without starter Marcus Davenport.
A second-round pick out of Kentucky in 2022, Paschal had two sacks and made 10 starts for the Lions last season.
Davenport has been on injured reserve since straining a pectoral muscle in the Lions’ Week 2 win over the Chicago Bears. He spent the open portion of Wednesday’s practice working alongside injured cornerback D.J. Reed with trainers on the Lions’ indoor practice field.
The Lions practiced Wednesday without three starters on their offensive line and two key contributors on defense.
Offensive guard Christian Mahogany is out until at least late December with a broken bone in his leg. Left tackle Taylor Decker is dealing with shoulder and knee injuries. And right tackle Penei Sewell spent the open portion of practice working on the side with trainers.
Swing tackle Dan Skipper also did not practice Wednesday.
If Decker, Sewell and Skipper can’t play this week against the Washington Commanders, practice squad linemen Devin Cochran and Mason Miller likely would take their place.
On defense, safety Kerby Joseph remains out with a bone bruise in his knee, and backup defensive lineman Pat O’Connor did not practice Wednesday.
