The Arizona Cardinals are placing Kyler Murray on injured reserve, which will give the seventh-year quarterback more time to recover from a foot sprain.

Coach Jonathan Gannon on Wednesday called it a “collective decision,” and said that he’s hopeful Murray can return this season. The quarterback will have to miss at least the next four games.

Gannon had previously announced that Jacoby Brissett would start Sunday’s NFC West contest against the Seattle Seahawks. This will mark Brissett’s fourth start in a row, the last coming in Monday night’s win over the Dallas Cowboys, which snapped a five-game losing streak.

The Cardinals are 3-5 and trying to climb back into the division race, but they have a long way to go. After Seattle, they play San Francisco, Jacksonville and Tampa Bay.

“Looking at it right now, that’s the best thing for him and us,” Gannon said of the IR decision. “(Murray is) fully committed right now, and he’s going to concentrate on getting healthy. He’s not healthy enough to play.”

Murray injured his foot late in Arizona’s Oct. 5 loss to Tennessee. Since then, the 32-year-old Brissett, a journeyman the Cardinals signed over the offseason, has sparked Arizona’s offense, igniting a quarterback controversy as well as questions about Murray’s future in the organization. Murray is in the second year of a five-year, $230.5 million extension.

The IR decision comes a week after Gannon told reporters that the Cardinals were preparing to start Murray — or that he’d at least have a role — against the Cowboys, giving the impression that he was close to returning.

“This pivot, I would say, is completely predicated on the information that we have now and his health,” Gannon said.

He added: “We’re never going to put a guy out there that doesn’t feel good about going out there, mentally and physically.”

Kedon Slovis will back up Brissett.
