When running back D’Andre Swift was ruled out of the Chicago Bears‘ Week 9 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, it provided an opportunity to rookie Kyle Monangai to get his first career NFL start.

Monangai did not disappoint, much to the pleasant surprise of the Bears, the coaching staff, and the fanbase that had been screaming for a running back addition all throughout the offseason. Making the most of his opportunity, Monangai totaled 198 scrimmage yards, including 176 rushing yards and averaged 6.8 yards per carry.

Monangai showcased a violent running style that should complement Swift once he returns, and after just one game, the rookie seventh-round pick proved himself worthy of his place on the team. After the win, Monangai discussed what his first career NFL start meant to him, and how it can help him build for the future.

“I have high expectations for myself, I put a lot of pressure on myself,” Monangai said. “The work I put in, I expect the results I get, but it doesn’t mean I’m satisfied or anything like that. It just means I’ve got to keep going. This is more of just letting myself know I’m on the right track. Now it’s time to keep going, put the foot on the gas and continue to keep this trend going.”

Chicago may have a welcomed surprise on their hands with the play of Monangai, and they could lean on the rookie to be their change of pace back, or their offensive igniter, even with Swift in the lineup.
