LOUISVILLE – Great Crossing’s football season came to an abrupt stop against Class 6A powerhouse Trinity Thursday in a 56-0 opening-round playoff defeat.
The Warhawks, who entered the game with nearly one-third of the team out due to injury, did not cross midfield in the loss.
With sophomore quarterback Grant Rock out, Trinity had five interceptions against the Warhawks.
It was 35-0 with a running clock at the end of the first quarter.
Two-time defending state champion Trinity owns 11 straight playoff wins. The Shamrocks are widely considered the state’s No. 1 team and are looking for their 30th state title.
Great Crossing senior running back Luke Ballard, pressed into late-season duty at quarterback, left the game after being hit as he threw in the first half and did not return.
Ballard had 17 rushing touchdowns this season. He finished his career with more than 3,300 yards and 47 TD.
Eighteen seniors depart the program: Zack Baker, Lonnie Braunm, Michael Braunm, Jonas Sanneman, Nick Jones, William Braunm, AJ Wells, Titus Smith, Wyatt Highley, Jake Kearney, Colby Abner, Tyler Mullannix, Mason Richie, Caliel Williams, Ballard, Ahmed Al Bargouthy, Hunter Moody and Trey Campbell.
Great Crossing finishes at 1-10 after a 10-4 season that ended in the 6A state semifinal last year.
Trinity is 9-2, with its only losses by a field goal to Cincinnati parochial giants Moeller and St. Xavier. Only one in-state win for the Shamrocks has been by a margin of fewer than 32 points.
