Cardinals’ QB Kyler Murray placed on injured reserve, Gannon announces

  • November 7, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback Kyler Murray is headed to the injured reserve list as he recovers from a lingering foot injury.

During a press conference on Wednesday, head coach Jonathan Gannon announced that Murray will be out, but does have a chance to come back this season. ESPN Senior Insider Adam Schefter said Murray will miss a minimum of four games.

“Today, Kyler is going to go on IR. Feel like that’s the best thing for him and for us. He’s not fully healthy, ready to go yet, so that makes the most sense,” Gannon said. “Obviously, that’s a change, but we just felt, looking at it right now, that’s the best thing for him and us, like I just said.”

“He’s fully committed. Right now what he’s going to do is concentrate on is getting healthy. He’s not healthy enough to play. He needs to get healthy so he can get back to playing football,” Gannon added.

The Red Birds will now rely on veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who is coming off a primetime win against the Dallas Cowboys. Brissett had a third straight good performance in Murray’s place on Monday night, throwing for 261 yards and two touchdowns in an impressive 27-17 win that snapped the Cardinals’ five-game losing streak.

Brissett’s excellence under center — combined with Murray’s lackluster play over the first five games — has created a bit of a quarterback controversy in the desert.

Brissett brushed aside a question on Monday night asking if he should be the full-time starter, saying he doesn’t “get into that stuff” and just wants to perform well when called upon.

“The good teams in this league find ways to continue to get better,” Brissett added. ”That is what we are doing at this point in the season, just trying to find ways to get better. You tweak things, you go back to your drawing board.”

In just three games, the 32-year-old Brissett has thrown for 860 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Many highlighted his connection to top wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who finished with 96 yards and a touchdown against Dallas.

While questions swirl about Murray’s long-term future in the desert, he sits in the middle of a 5-year, $230.5 million deal that runs through 2027.

The Red Birds can still make a playoff run as they sit at a 3-5 record so far this year.

Next up, the Cardinals travel to the Pacific Northwest to face division rival Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Brissett will start for the Red Birds.
