CAN JAXSON CONTINUE HISTORIC START?
In last week’s loss to the 49ers, Jaxson Dart completed a season-high 72.7 percent of his passes, totaling 191 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The rookie quarterback also added eight carries for 56 yards and an additional touchdown on his way to making history. Dart set a new franchise record with five games with at least one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown. He also became just the third rookie in NFL history to have as many games with both a passing and rushing score.
This strong performance came right after Dart was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month. In four October games, Dart threw for seven touchdowns, accounted for 10 total touchdowns, and had a passer rating of 90.0, all of which were the most among NFL rookies. He is now up to 15 total touchdowns (10 passing, five rushing) with just three interceptions across his six starts.
The Bears’ defense has struggled this season, especially over the last two weeks. Going up against Tyler Huntley and the Ravens, the Bears surrendered 30 points, before giving up 42 points to Joe Flacco and the Bengals this past weekend. This dropped Chicago to the 29th-ranked scoring defense. They head into Week 10 ranking 25th in passing yards and 31st in passing touchdowns allowed, although the unit does rank first in the league in total takeaways (19) and interceptions (13).
“They’re tough,” Dart said about the Bears’ defense. “They lead the league in turnovers. We’re definitely going to have to do our due diligence in making sure that we take care of the ball. It’s going to be a lot of fun to play in that atmosphere. That’s a place that I’ve always wanted to play at. I’m excited to play against a traditional organization in a place like Chicago against a really good team.”
SLOWING DOWN THE RUN
The defense’s struggles to slow down the run game continued this past weekend against San Francisco. 49ers running backs Christian McCaffrey and Brian Robinson Jr. combined for 159 yards on the ground and a 4.8 average yards per carry, with both backs recording a rushing touchdown along with three runs of 10+ yards.
The Giants have now surrendered an average of 192.3 rushing yards per game over the last three weeks, leading to the unit ranking 31st in total rushing yards and 32nd in rushing yards per attempt. Through nine weeks, the Bears have been one of the most run-heavy teams in the NFL with 235 total rushing attempts. With it looking like the weather could play a factor in Chicago on Sunday, expect the Bears to lean heavily into their run game.
After missing last week’s game due to a groin injury, running back D’Andre Swift returned to practice this week and was a full participant on Thursday. The veteran leads the Bears with 464 yards on 100 carries, good for an average of 4.6 yards per carry, and four touchdowns while adding 18 receptions for 192 yards and an additional score. With Swift sidelined last week, rookie Kyle Monangai led the backfield with an impressive 26 rush attempts for 176 yards (6.8 avg.) and finished with 198 yards from scrimmage. Both running backs will likely play roles in Week 10.
