Yankee Stadium responds to President Trump before Detroit Tigers game

Yankee Stadium responds to President Trump ahead of Detroit Tigers game, 9/11 tribute in New York on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025.

The NFL’s Week 10 game between the Detroit Lions and the Washington Commanders will feature the Commander-in-Chief as guest.

As announced on Friday, Nov. 7, on the Pat McAfee show on ESPN, President Donald Trump will be in attendance for the Lions-Commanders game at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, on Sunday, Nov. 9.

According to McAfee, Trump will be there to observe the halftime veterans’ celebration and will be sitting in the owners box with Commanders owner Josh Harris.

Shortly after McAfee’s announcement, NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared a statement from the Commanders confirming Trump will be in attendance.

“We are honored to welcome President Trump to the game as we celebrate those who have served and continue to serve our country,” Commanders president Mark Clouse said in the statement. “The entire Commanders organization is proud to participate in the NFL’s league-wide Salute to Service initiative, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, active-duty service members, and their families this Sunday.”

Several Lions players were asked about Trump being in attendance and the consensus in the locker room seemed to be it’ll be a cool experience.

“Check that off the list, right?” said Lions linebacker Trevor Nowaske. “That’ll be cool. I did not know he was going to be there, but that’ll be super cool to have the president. That’ll be something I’ll be able to tell my kids, I played in front of the president. That’ll be sweet.”

“Appreciate him coming out, but I sure hope he ain’t coming out there to see a Washington win” Lions cornerback Amik Robertson said. “That’s all I know. That’s all I can say.”

This isn’t the first time a U.S. president has gone to a game featuring a Detroit sports team. In fact, this wouldn’t even be the first time this year that Trump has attended a game featuring a Detroit sports team.

In recognition of the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Trump attended a Sept. 11 game at Yankee Stadium between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers, one the Yankees won 9-3. That game presented a “unique experience” for many Tigers, as some players even broke out the famous “Trump dance” after getting on base. Will we see the same moves from Lions and Commanders players this weekend?

“I know that a lot of people are going to be trying to do his little, their celebration is going to be his little dance so I’m excited to see who do that first,” Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes said. “If Malcolm (Rodriguez) was playing he’d for sure be doing it, but that’s neither there nor there.

“I still got to remind myself of the dance. I don’t think I’ll do it – ah, it might be one of those in-the-moment-type situations.”
