San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy might be back in uniform for the first time in six weeks on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, but not as the starter, coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday.
Purdy may back up Mac Jones, who will make his eighth start of the season, as the next step in his recovery from a nagging toe injury suffered in the season opener. That decision will come on Saturday.
“I don’t really talk to him until Saturday,” Shanahan said about Purdy. “(I’ll) talk to him about how the whole week went and stuff. I will see where he is this Saturday compared to a week ago, and see how much better he has gotten.”
Purdy is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game, though Shanahan said he is “further along” than he was last week.
Purdy last played in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, when he aggravated the toe injury. He has not practiced in full since, though he has taken an increasing share of reps with the starters over the past two weeks. Last week, Purdy was questionable for the first time since Week 4, but he did not dress for the team’s win over the New York Giants.
Jones has gone 5-2 as the starter in Purdy’s stead, including a Thursday night overtime win over the Rams in Los Angeles in Week 5. He has completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 1,832 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Shanahan said Monday that Jones’ effectiveness would not impact how quickly the team works Purdy back into the lineup.
“They’re not related,” Shanahan said. “This is Brock’s team. When Brock’s good to go and everything and can play like Brock, there’s no decision to be made. It’s just nice that … with the uncertainty of the toe, it’s cool to have someone playing as good as Mac is. But they’re not related.”
The Niners (6-3) sit a half game back of the Rams and Seattle Seahawks (both 6-2) in the NFC West. San Francisco is 3-0 in the division and will visit the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11.
Meanwhile, receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee) will miss his sixth straight game. Defensive tackle Alfred Collins is listed as questionable after sustaining a hip injury in practice on Wednesday, while left guard Ben Bartch is expected to be activated from injured reserve and return to the lineup.
