Signed this offseason, Jones has made seven starts, first relieving Purdy in Weeks 2-3. All told, the 49ers are 5-2 with Jones starting, as he’s completed 168 of 250 passes (67.2%) for 1,832 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Jones’ ability to not just keep the 49ers afloat but in contention for the division title has been exemplary. There wasn’t a better example than his showing against the Rams in Week 5, when he battled through injuries to throw for 342 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
With Jones up again, cause for concern continues for Purdy.
Purdy has started just two games this season due to a toe injury that is lingering to say the least. The 49ers are 1-1 in 2025 with Purdy, who’s thrown for 586 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. Shanahan said Thursday he believes Purdy will play again this season, but the approach has been one of caution with his QB1.
Once more, Jones will lead the 49ers (6-3), as they look to go 2-0 against the first-place Rams (6-2) on Sunday.
