Week 10 is here, and the San Francisco 49ers are at 6-3 despite all of the injuries and adversity the team has faced this season. They’re currently the third seed in the NFC West, behind the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks, but they are undefeated in the division.
The Rams are coming into town, and they are looking for revenge after losing 26-23 in Week 5. If the 49ers want to remain undefeated in the West and reclaim the number one spot, they must stick to the Keys to Victory.
Protect the QB
The Rams have a pair of pass rushers who know how to get to the quarterback: Jared Verse and Bryon Young. Expect 49ers left tackle Trent Williams to tie up Verse, but the opposite side, where Colton McKivitz lines up, could be a problem for the 49ers.
Young has ten sacks on the season, ranking him second in sacks this year. McKivitz has been phenomenal all season long, except when it comes to speed rushers. In Week 5, McKivitz tied for a team-high four pressures allowed while giving up a sack and two quarterback hurries.
The 49ers could put George Kittle alongside Young to slow down his pass rush, giving Mac Jones the extra time he needs to complete passes. If the 49ers can protect the quarterback, they will win the game.
Protect the Ball
The 49ers have 13 turnovers on the season, with nine interceptions and four fumbles. They are ranked eighth on the season, tied with the Carolina Panthers, Las Vegas Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Seahawks in giveaways.
The Rams rank seventh in takeaways with 12 on the season, and have seven interceptions and five fumbles. The 49ers must protect the ball at all costs in this matchup and avoid giving the Rams easy scoring opportunities.
Mac Jones must play efficiently and take what the defense is giving him. Running backs, as well as tight ends and wide receivers, must hold onto the ball. In Week 5, the 49ers had zero turnovers, but their defense forced two turnovers against the Rams.
It’s simple: win the turnover battle, win the game. The 49ers won 26-23 in Week 5. If they want to win in Week 10, they must protect the ball.
Limit Explosive Plays
In their Week 5 matchup, the 49ers defense allowed seven explosive plays—five in the air of 20-plus yards, and two on the ground of ten-plus yards. Robert Saleh’s young defense will have to play fundamentally sound, communicate effectively, and minimize mental mistakes on defense.
The Rams will be without Tutu Atwell, but the 49ers must be prepared for any of the Rams’ pass catchers on Sunday. If the 49ers can limit the explosive plays and keep everything in front of them, their chances of winning and becoming 7-3 will increase.

In conclusion, the Rams and the 49ers are familiar with each other, starting with their head coaches. Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan will devise great plans. It will come down to player execution and minimal mistakes.
If the 49ers stick to the Keys to Victory, they will reign supreme over the NFC West.
