While the Los Angeles Chargers are chasing the Denver Broncos in the AFC West, they’ll host a Pittsburgh Steelers team that is trying to maintain its status atop the AFC North.
The Sunday Night Football clash is one of the spotlight games in Week 10, with a lot of question marks of legitimacy surrounding both teams.
The biggest question – and most common – for both teams is whether or not they’ll endure late-season collapses. Neither is favored to win their division, despite their standing heading into Sunday.
Here’s a quick glance at Sunday’s game:
LAST TIME OUT: Los Angeles 27-20 win at Tennessee; Pittsburgh 27-20 win over Indianapolis.
LAST MEETING: Steelers 20-10 over the Chargers on Sept. 22, 2024.
VEGAS LINE (courtesy Westgate): Chargers -2.5, O/U 44.5
BETTING TRENDS: The road team has covered four of the last six meetings, while the Chargers are on a 2-1 ATS streak when visiting Pittsburgh. Five of the last eight have meetings have gone over, including four of the last five in Pittsburgh.
CHARGERS KEY PLAYERS: Quarterback Justin Herbert passed for 250 yards, two TDs and one interception with a 101.2 passer rating, to go along with 57 rushing yards and a rushing TD last week. Herbert has five games with 250 or more yards passing this season, tied for fifth most in the NFL. … Running back Jaret Patterson had his second straight game with a rushing TD in Week 9. … WR Keenan Allen has registered his 12th career season with 50 or more catches and 500 or more receiving yards. Allen has 350 yards receiving and a TD against Pittsburgh, with 112 yards receiving in the last meeting. … Lineback Khalil Mack has three sacks this season and 34 since joining the Bolts. He can join Hall of Famer Kevin Greene as the only players since 1982 with 35 or more sacks with three different teams. Mack’s 110.5 sacks since 2014 are the fourth most in the league.
PROP TO WATCH: Justin Herbert Under 260 yards (+100)
Herbert is facing one of the fiercest defensive units in the league, and when you consider he’s surpassed 260 yards passing only four times this season, and thrown for 250 or fewer in the other five, it’s understandable to expect him to fall under this benchmark. In 24 career primetime games, Herbert is split down the middle, throwing for more than 260 yards 12 times. He’s stayed under that total in four of his last six primetime games.
STEELERS KEY PLAYERS: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers just passed for 203 yards and a touchdown during the Week 9 win. Rodgers has a TD pass in every game this season for a total of 17, tied for the third most in the league. Rodgers owns a 100-plus passer rating in four of his last five games. … Running back Jaylen Warren rushed for 31 yards and two TDs last week, and is aiming for his second straight road game with 100 or more yards rushing and fifth straight with 50 or more scrimmage yards. … WR Calvin Austin is looking for his third consecutive road game with a receiving touchdown. Last week he had four receptions for 95 yards and a receiving TD. … The Steelers defense recorded five sacks, three interceptions, 13 pass deflections, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries against the Colts last week, becoming the second team this century to do so. The Steelers are one of two teams to register five or more sacks in a game four times this season.
PROP TO WATCH: Jaylen Warren Under 60 yards (+110)
Warren, who averages 4.1 yards per carry, is averaging just 57.7 yards per game. He’s had one breakout game, when he rushed for 127 yards at Cincinnati. The Chargers are allowing less than five yards per rushing attempt, and just 17 attempts per game. In giving up only 84.3 yards on the ground per game, the Bolts will be tough to penetrate on the whole, let alone Warren doing the majority of the heavy lifting.
