GREEN BAY — Bo Melton doesn’t know whether he’ll be the in-case-of-emergency-break-glass guy at wide receiver, but the Green Bay Packers wideout-turned-cornerback is ready if called upon.
“I don’t know yet,” Melton said Saturday afternoon, following the team’s final practice in advance of Monday night’s matchup between the Packers (5-2-1) and the defending Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles (6-2) at Lambeau Field. “But I definitely know what’s going on and definitely have been in the loop, for sure.”
What’s going on is the Packers find themselves in less-than-ideal circumstances, with three wide receivers — Matthew Golden (shoulder), Savion Williams (foot) and Dontayvion Wicks (calf) — all listed as questionable for the game.
Golden did not practice at all on Friday or Saturday; Williams sat out Thursday’s practice but took part on a limited basis on Friday and Saturday.
The Packers also listed starting right tackle Zach Tom (back) as questionable as well, but he is expected to play. If he couldn’t go, ex-Eagles offensive lineman Darian Kinnard or rookie Anthony Belton would both be options to replace him.
As expected, defensive end Lukas Van Ness (foot) and cornerback Nate Hobbs (knee) were ruled out for the game. The Eagles ruled out starting center Cam Jurgens (knee), who’ll miss his second straight week.
The greater concern for the Packers, though, is at wide receiver, where head coach Matt LaFleur was hoping to offset the loss of star tight end Tucker Kraft — now out for the season to a torn ACL in his right knee suffered during last Sunday’s loss to Carolina — by leaning on the team’s receiver depth.
Instead, with Jayden Reed (collarbone, foot) still on injured reserve and several weeks away from returning to game action, the Packers’ current list of healthy wide receivers consists of Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson and Malik Heath — and Heath had been on the injury report Thursday and Friday with a hip injury before being removed from the report on Saturday.
Wicks, who has missed the last two games with the calf injury, practiced on a limited basis on Thursday, Friday and Saturday but stopped short after practice of declaring himself good to go.
“I don’t know. We’re taking it day-by-day. We’ll see Monday,” said Wicks, who has caught 13 passes for 134 yards on 20 targets while playing 203 offensive snaps in the six games he’s played. “I ain’t really worried about what nobody else’s got going [injury-wise]. I’m just worried about me, really, and how I feel.
“If I’m good, I’m good. We’ve still got two whole days before the game to see how I feel, but at the end of the day I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do to get back out there. And not just getting back out there, but getting back out there at my best.”
The Packers also have four wide receivers on their practice squad: Will Sheppard, Isaiah Neyor, Jakobie Keeney-James and Michael Woods II.
Asked about his level of concern with Golden, LaFleur said the rookie first-round pick, who suffered the injury last Sunday against the Panthers, had not suffered a setback during the week.
“It’s just one of those deals. He’s fighting to play,” LaFleur said. “But he’s got to be able to handle everything we’re throwing at him.”
Asked if he thought Wicks was ready to play, LaFleur replied, “Hopefully. I think he had a good day [on Friday], although he was limited. So we’ll see how he’s feeling out there and then make a decision.”
Melton, who transitioned from wideout to corner during the offseason, caught 27 passes for 351 yards and two touchdowns (including playoffs) while playing wide receiver in his first two seasons with the Packers. He has played seven offensive snaps this season and has one rush for 3 yards on a jet sweep.
He has not seen regular-season game action at his new position but has been a core special-teams player, playing on all four units and also returning six kickoffs for a 26.8-yard average.
But he’s ready for anything on Monday night.
“Yeah, I feel good about that. I feel real good,” Melton said. “They’ve prepared me well, so I feel like if I get in that position, I’ll do what I usually do at receiver.”
