The Denver Film Festival on Saturday will feature the premiere of the Netflix documentary “Elway,” about the playing days and legacy of the Denver Broncos’ most recognizable figure.
“Elway” was first announced in December 2024, and produced by Omaha Productions, which is owned by fellow Bronco legend, Peyton Manning. Quarterback John Elway led the Broncos from 1983-1999, producing winning season after winning season for the franchise. “The Duke of Denver” eventually won back-to-back Super Bowls as a player, going out on top a champion after Super Bowl XXXIII. After his playing days, Elway was the Broncos’ first Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee in 2004. Elway later came back to the team as general manager in 2012.
Elway helped build the “No Fly Zone” defense, and landed the biggest free agent fish of all, Manning in 2012. During his time in the front office, the Broncos won the AFC West four straight years, had two Super Bowl appearances, and won Super Bowl 50. Elway finished his tenure in the front office in March 2023.
Recently, Elway suffered personal tragedy when friend and business partner Jeff Sperbeck fell out of a golf cart Elway was driving, and died. Elway was cleared of all charges by the Riverside County sheriff’s office.
Despite his polarizing image among fans, Elway was a vital figure in the three titles Denver has won since 1997. He is still a fixture in Denver events to this day, having made the state of Colorado his home.
